It's not completely dead yet. There's still a possibility of someone showing up and continue the development of it. I want to believe.
>>
>>159931111
But who on modern /a/ (or /g/) knows anything about computers?
>>
>>159931140
I don't think it's such a low chance that there's one or two anons who loves watching anime and uses MPC-HC and would be willing to work for its continuation. Isn't this somehow similar to the Pantsu's creation? And even if we fully disregarded the chance that someone from /a/ or /g/ would show up, MPC-HC is still rather a quite popular video player, it wouldn't be unusual to find someone willing to help. Maybe I'm just being optimistic since I've been using it for years, I don't know.
>>
After years of mockery, our age has finally arrived. Rejoice, my VLC brothers.
>>
>>159931920

I'd rather stream than use VLC
>>
>>159931547

You're unlikely to find someone with the skills and high functioning autism to program something to support madVR. Most don't care, because current resolutions are good enouogh.

Anime isn't shot in 4K, and although the best movies look best in full HD, most anons opt for 720p. There's very little meaningful difference between 1080 and 720 for TV anime. Just look at which torrents get the most DLs, understand that most of the world doesn't live in a capped wired broadband shithole, and you'll see that full HD, 4K+ is niche for anime purposes.
>>
>>159928715
Great. Now if only Madshi can get that stick out of his ass and contribute to the glorious free software MVP player.
>>
>>159932164
The reason 720p is the most downloaded is because TV anime is aired at that resolution. The 1080p torrents are just upscaled with inferior quality.
>>
>>159932418
Wrong.
CR gets their files at 1080p. Their 720p encodes are bad downscales.
>>
>>159932450
If I wanted quality why would I watch a CR rip? I can assure you that a 720p TV rip looks better than the banded to hell trash CR calls a "release"
>>
>>159928715
I haven't updated in a while, it still runs fine, who cares?
>>
>>159932487
You were just talking about "most downloaded". Don't move the goalposts.
>>
>>159932575
Yes, in most cases the 720p release is the most downloaded. This is true for both cr rips and tv rips. It makes no sense for cr rips, but it does for tv rips. If someone wants to watch a decent quality rip, they watch a 720p tv rip, if they don't care they get the cr rip. My point is, that for someone interested in quality, the 720p tv rips are the best thing to watch as it's airing. I'm not moving the goalposts you stupid nigger, stop trying to argue shit when your understanding of fallacies comes only from reading argument in this shithole.
>>
I wish amazon would kill CR already.
I torrent my chinese cartoons but tried out primevideo out of curiosity and it's much better.
>>
>>159932724

You're a dumbass because

>If I wanted quality why would I watch a CR rip?

Nobody cares about what you think. The discussion was >>159932164 pointing out that 720p is the most popular DL when 480p or 1080p are available. Who gets the most hits? Horrible. What is Horrible? A dirty CR ripper.

People watch 720p because 480p is too fucking ugly but the difference between 720p and 1080p, even on a downscale, is minimal. They'd rather get the file faster because the file quality is a wash.

720p can be unacceptable. Most of /a/ has seen Kimi no Na wa because the 720p upscale is bad, and it's a movie which is worth scaling up the resolution. But for TV anime? "good enough" is fine.

And I bet those who DL 480p, are watching it on their phones where the resolution isn't as bad. 720p is PCs and 1080p those who also have TVs.

>>
Although I'm gonna miss MPC for nostalgic reasons, I think it's good that development is moving towards cross-platform options (VLC, mpv) rather than a bunch of random exclusive media players for every OS. It makes people's lives a lot easier.
>>
>>159938253

>>159937455
Different people have different needs, capabilities and priorities. One anon can't never watch an episode without madvr on the highest settings possible, one cares more about bandwidth or HD space while another simply doesn't know any better.

The thing I'll hold against any players whose subtitle filter isn't based on VSF is that you break the typesetting fansubbers slave away making for hours which in that case, even a hardsubbed reenocde would be better.
>>
>>159938548
but rendering techniques heavily use proprietary CPU and GPU proprietary packages (such as D3D12, DXVA or CUDA) for better performance anon. I prefer watching my cute anime cartoons without artifacts with proprietary engines over foss ones.
>>
>>159938548
Is there any real reason to use mpv over MPC-HC when you're not on Linux though? I like mpv, and it works better on my laptop, but on my Windows desktop with a beefy graphics card what's the point?
>>
>>159939053
OpenGL, Vulkan, and OpenCL are OS-agnostic, anon. It's time to ditch the proprietary engines.
>>
>>159938948
I heard my grandfather sometimes speak of those"fansubbers", usually in a hushed voice. His eyes would gleam with a mysterious fire while he recounted those precious memories of a long forgotten age. He met them just once, as a young boy no larger than three cheese wheels, stacked on top of each other. But that one experience would never leave him again, for as long as he lived. He told me how the fansubbers came walking through the village wearing grey cloaks and grey clothes underneath. Nobody dared make a hush as they passed, so imposing was their presence. They had serious expressions and they walked with determination. As they had left through the west gate the smith said that they were heading for the shores. That all the fansubbers were leaving. And no one said a word in response. Everybody just stared after them until they had disappeared behind a turn. Then the villagers went into their homes for a bleak dinner and a restless night.
My grandfather died last fall, but in his final moments he thought of the fansubbers. I don't know if they will ever return for us. But I put a candle into my window every night, so that they would not get lost on their way back.

>nobody is this stupid right?
I think his point is that if an old pack like CCCP still works without issues in 2017, MPC-HC still has several good years before becoming obsolete. By then, hopefully, others would have picked up the development or even forked a new and improved version.

There's no reason to keep developing it. DirectShow is dead (even Microsoft moved on), a fucking mess, and MPC is probably "perfected" as in there's nothing more to add (meme filters will still be made by madshi I guess). It's easier to develop a GUI to mpv, than to make new features to MPC.

You know you can use ffmpeg to do that directly, right?

Doesn't functionally mean nothing for at least a decade though? How many new encodes could possibly be invented and accepted in that time really?
>>

I've been using VLC for years despite all the green arrows from 4chan
>>
>>159958811
Then you're an idiot. VLC is still horrible and always was with most of the high quality encodes
>>
>>159958811
VLC is more reliable than mpv, which still chokes on things like linked chapters (and then the developer insists that encoders shouldn't use it. gee, love to know who made him king of animu). So if something won't play in mpv for whatever reason, VLC will pretty much always be able to handle it.
>>
>>159958907
MPC handles those fine. Why are you using VLC
>>
>>159958806
AV1 is looks very promising, is the open-source alternative to HEVC and it's being develop by AOMedia and Google.
Some anime encoders are waiting for AV1 to be released to decide which format to use, AV1 or HEVC.
>>
>>159958955
MPC is Windows only.

Linked chapters have been around for nearly 10 years now.
I remember Shugo Chara starting it.

I hope to God, Madoka, Haruhi, and Lain that they get it finished and working before Daiz has time to enact his evil scheme to force everyone over to x265.

The folks at CR, Amazon and Daisuki?

Amazon, Netflix and Hulu are part of AOMedia, probably when the stable branch of AV1 is released they'll start using it in their platforms.
But I was referring to the fansubbing community.

I'd do it but video rendering is a big pain in the ass, somebody else can worry about that shit.
>>
So why do you need a program that's constantly updated just for the sake of it, if it works just fine now? This ain't fucking video games the only real advancement was h264 standard and that's been long ago, even phones and everything can play those by default now.

It makes no sense for cr rips, but it does for tv rips.

CR 1080p videos are almost always upscaled. There are only very few times where you'd want to waste disk space on a 1080 from HS: old funimation releases and when it's known that the anime is drawn at a resolution higher than 720 are the only times. Otherwise there's no point in getting higher resolution, your video player will upscale just as well as the 1080 is upscaled, if not better.
However, the reason most people grab 720 is because a lot of people are on toasters or stream to other devices (gaming devices, those USB media things, etc).
>>
If madvr was open source I'm sure MPC-HC would still be alive
>>
>>159959823
>>159959763
Pantsu is objectively inferior and prioritises useless features such as the mascots over actual functionality of the site.
>>
>>159960179
Pretty much this, if madvr was open source it would be even shipped as the default engine in MPC-HC.

No, it's really the other way around. Even if the source from the animation studio is 720p, you should download the 1080p version of HS because CR is so bad at downscaling.
>>
>>159960766
What did you mean by this?
>>
>>159960820
CR gets the anime in 1080p. It's an upscale, but that's irrelevant. You don't lose data from upscaling. But CR wants to offer 720p and 480p versions to save bandwidth and so they make those versions themselves. Except they suck at it. Badly.

I find mpv has a different failure mode than VLC, one that is most of the time less noticeable. While VLC tends to drop frames altogether, leading to grey regions due to the way video compressiom works, mpv holds the old frame until it can successfully load a new one, which causes "stitching" artifacts as two different and non-sequential frames take up different parts of the screen.
>>
I wanted to like MPV, but it takes quite a while to open up compare to almost any other media player I've tried, the only way to fix it is to use angle which sometimes randomly crashes if you fullscreen.

So I gave up and used PotPlayer, more settings and a really good interface honestly.

Remember when the word autist wasn't misused as an insult that means "you have standards and at least some basic knowledge of your hobby, and that offends and scares me despite that fact that I came to post on a board for enthusiasts of that specific hobby"?

Me neither.
