I didn't have a favourite character in Evangelion I hated them all equally so as a zaShuninafag Kado's was worse, by far.
Even though I know in my mind that he ascended and didn't die and he'll process all that information eventually I cannot forget his anguish as he died. Since his crying face is the last thing I saw I get the sense he'll suffer for eternity. And it makes me mad.
It only makes it worse that his death was at the hands of an underforeshadowed, rushed Deus ex Machina. I know it's good to break the rules of storytelling sometimes but really I cannot see Yukika as a successful case of that.

Director said that both he and Shindo ascended, and that even though it won't be in human form, they will inevitably meet again.
So no eternal suffering, at least, even if a lot of what the production teams said afterwards sounds like damage control.

You can tell zaShu was the favorite character of the production staff by how much kinder they are to him than Nozaki was while writing the show.

I know but that's what I'm complaining about. They didn't make it obvious. In the audience's mind, the last thing they see of the emotional state of a character is true until they see him again. Personally, I really like his character development and concept. He goes from a completely blank slate with no emotions and progressively learns to become more human, but retains his very alien way of thinking.
He's cute in his behaviors when interacting with things (phone, bread, etc) and he's creepy in his "information-based" mentality.
His character design is nice, yes, but it's the emotional development that made me a fan.

Kado's is the worst ending in the history of anime. I marathoned the whole series in one night because the first eight or so episodes were fantastic, I was enjoying every minute of it, an interesting anime with plenty of metaphysics and mindfuck that started off with a genre bait-and-switch. The first two thirds of the show were mature and didn't rely on shitty anime tropes, and I loved that... then the rushed, god-awful ending happened that turned everything totally on its head and was just complete and utter shit, ending with a garbage mary sue that they pulled out of their ass just to kill off zaShunina because they made him too broken to get rid of any other way, then that character promptly fucks off to the afterlife immediately after accomplishing the sole purpose they wrote her in for. A number of us still like the series as a whole. We do acknowledge its faults, but we try not to let the ending sour the experience as a whole.
That said, the novel actually appears to be a very different and very interesting beast in itself.

On some crazy level, the whole development is completely logical and sensible. You've got a being whose fundamental perception and standards are all about information; emotional appeals, blackmail, moralising, threats etc. don't really work on it because it doesn't think that way. You like that being and want to resolve the whole mess to everybody's satisfaction. There were better ways to do this though. The idea is not bad at its core, the propblem is the lack of preparation, foreshadowing, and most glaringly, the "how did you know your daughter would become a literal god" problem. We're talking about a story here, and deus ex machinas are story anathemas.
Had Shindo been a douche who forced Saraka to pop babies into her hyperbolic time chamber for eternity until a singularity appeared, it would have fixed everything wrong with this ending.
Because I don't buy the "wow, there was no way zaShunina could have predicted this". The fuck? He gave them the Nanomis-hein. If he could predict that Shindo would use hyperspace wam why couldn't he predict they'd alter time to pop babies? The probability for Saraka to birth a singularity was low as fuck, no matter how you look at it. There is a discrepancy between how easy it was to create a god and zaShunina's lack of foresight.

There was absolutely no reason for him to think that. You said it yourself, Saraka had a fully human body. Anyways, if this belief was the crux of the reason why Yukika's existence is a surprise (I assume it's not just the cucking here) and zShunina's blindspot they should have lampshaded it in the show at some point. It would have been easy enough too, all Shindo needed to do was ask zaShunina how anisotropic beings reproduce.

I don't think reproduction is something true anisotropics think about much. Keep in mind that they're sexless and immortal, so chances are that it simply didn't cross his mind because it's normally beyond his sphere of interest. He also had other things to angst about.

There was that conversation Shindou had with his mum about anisotropes and their loneliness/ability to have children, but personally I didn't think the loneliness thing applied to either zaShunina or Tsukai anyway. And the kid thing turned out to be just some convenient plot device anyway, so I didn't really get the whole 'drinking with your kids' line. It just sounded like Mrs Shindou just wanted grandkids. The only thing that really mattered was the foreshadowing regarding Shindou's death and that was obvious as hell.

Towards the end, the perspectives had diverged to the point regular communication became impossible. The show outright told you that communication was a minefield even during the best times, simply because there were such fundamental differences between zaShunina and humans.

There was nothing to "talk" about anymore, at least not without getting humans tanged in the process. Connecting to zaShunina on his bizzare instinctual level was most likely the only viable option to somewhat satisfy both sides.

The novel readers mentioned that since zaShunina's emotions and thoughts can be so alien, they often manifest in odd ways. There's a scene where he discusses a very concrete murder, yet his expression and tone are described as curious and very kind.
