The late-night timeslot didn't exist back then and Eva aired right after TMNT. Nevertheless Eva got in problems for episode 18 and in general for being too gruesome for daytime. Shounenshit at the time had decapitation and bloodshed but Eva's depiction of violence felt too raw and the connection between Shinji and the viewer was too obvious. Besides, the children on the video don't seem to be that much into Eva, except for a girl that likes Asuka and an Rei fanboy.

Im not exactly sure, but i dont think anno was there to talk about Eva to the kids, just about the anime industry.
Eva was a hot topic back then, so he told some words about it, but i doubt many kids watched the show.

But as far as i know, Anno did want NGE to air on a Shounen timeslot, instead of a Seinen. And it actually did for half its run. Then it got changed agaisnt his will.
