It's good, but the anime doesn't do it justice because 1:1 adaptation of a lengthy manga means pacing issues since you read dialogues faster than animated characters talk.

Also, there's a lot of isolated stories only loosely connected to the main plot (doctor MC trying to find and kill his nemesis), so people who came for this are disappointed, but I think these side stories are the real meat and connect with the main theme, which is the celebration of human life.

tl;dr: Anime is flawed, and depending on how you read the mango you might love it or be disappointed by the direction it takes.

Hmm, I watched the anime and loved it mostly because of the sense it gave off as a really good old adventure RPG game. I liked how he goes from place to place meeting new people and saving lives. So I might actually like the manga better, I'll give it a shot.

I watched about 10 episodes, found it boring and dropped.

Was even more than I was willing to watch, usually if a show doesn't grab my attention in at least 3 episodes I drop it. I just tried more with One Piece because a friend of mine didn't shut the fuck up about it.

I watched a few episodes in different years. The only thing that happened was that Luffy won with his elastic body against opponents every time. He never used something new. But I haven't watched an episode of the last few years. Did One Piece get any better?

Not the guy you're responding to, but I've been watching through the series for the first time; and I can definitely say that after the Skypia arc is when shit stops being just 'O MY RUBBER GUM'; and Luffy actually has to start pulling new shit out of his ass to go against people who can actually stomp his face in. Episode 227-228 is specifically when shit starts going down; and really doesn't stop being entertaining to watch. Not saying the Skypia arc is shit, because it's fucking amazing; but that's when he stops just being able to dick around against people who are weaker than him.

Jiraiya doesn't really stand out to me as a good character. I've seen his exact archetype of "perverted old man with a good heart" done in other series before and it never felt like he did anything particularly unique with it.
