I've finished the anime and read some parts of the WN, and finally can confidently say that Emilia is useless and naive. Yes, maybe she's cute and "angelic" by the way she looks, and she's also a major character for the plot of the story, but besides that, she hasn't done anything significant for Subaru except be a normal cute, useless, and naive girl. An alluring figure, an endgame princess for Subaru like in Super Mario games. She has literally bewitched him, and is most likely related to Satella. That's the only reasonable explanation that Tappei can give for Subaru liking Emilia.

Yes, she's kind, but I don't understand why Emilia is even considered at all over Rem. She takes forever just to start liking him, and was only looking at him with gratitude because she wasn't compatible with him. It wasn't until Subaru started becoming a significant person in Lugnica (and also helping her with her trial...) that she can finally unload her uselessness on him, thus falling in "love" with him. Meanwhile, Rem can trust him enough with anything without having to be completely useless. I understand that this is the way it is because of the circumstances of the story so far, but there's literally no reason to like Emilia past the first 2-3 episodes, let alone her pathetically underwhelming "development" that arc 4 was made for.

It's simply and objectively wrong to like her over Rem when you see how much impact Rem left on Subaru in comparison, who also managed to do it with much less screentime.

Subaru isn't attracted to Emilia because she's kind, he's attracted to Emilia because he thinks he's in a Chinese cartoon until the despair really gets going. And part of being in a isekai show is that he gets cool OP powers and gets a cute, loving, delicate girl to like him because he's the big cool OP hero who saves the day. That is the premise of a lot of his actions, even his heroic ones. That's why he does all that cringey shit with the queen selection, because that shit is supposed to work just like in muh chinese cartoons.

The point that it DOESNT work because this is supposed to be a deconstruction of the genre, and the culimation of that failure is Emilia wrecking his shit and telling him how fake his "love" for her is. Now onto Rem. The thing about Rem is that she initially hates Subaru because of the smell. But over time, due to Subaru's heroic actions, she slowly learns to trust him. But here's the thing. Those actions were motivated by selfishness, ignorance, and greed. Subaru did those things because he was a retarded isekai hero. But the thing is that Rem doesn't give a shit about his motivations or his short comings because to her it's his actions that matter, and Rem sees the glimmer of a real hero (to her) in those. This is the point where Subaru starts over, starts becoming a REAL hero rather than a fake chinese cartoon hero.
