Its more that it could have been so much better. Focuses on mai waifu, and kirito is too edgy and suffers from muh depression. The premise is fantastic, group of people now in a fantasy world fighting a battle of attrition. All while dealing being cut off from irl, dealing with the dilemma to risk it for escape, or to sink in to escapism and stay. .hack does this much better, and with far better characters.
The act of PK is at least brought up, but only to make it dark and edgy. SAO should have been .hack with a little more action, better animation, and expanding the "stuck in game" to a community, rather than one person.

There's no romantic tension, because Kirito is already in a stable relationship. There's certainly no physical tension, because he's not really at risk at any point of the story. I don't think he ever has to fight anyone who is basically as good as him. Just like in Ordinal Scale, where Eiji is wearing fucking POWER ARMOR that lets him do SUPERJUMPS. Kirito beats him simply by outfighting him.
