That's far less horrible in terms of political agenda pushing, but worse in how it affects the plot. "But I'm a woman" doesn't exclude her being into other women per se, while "But I'm not into women" does. The dub requires you to believe she did a total 180 on her sexuality throughout the series, or was somehow so insecure she lied about it.

Honestly I'm surprised anyone on /a/ actually gives 1/10th of a shit about the series

Except despite producing metric tons of yaoi and yuri per year, Japan is still a very traditional and "homophobic" country. To the Japanese, the very idea of pushing an agenda in the same way as Western SJW are doing is outlandish. To them, media is part of the private sphere (honne), as opposed to the "face" you put on in public (tatemae). To them you can watch and do whatever the hell you want, as long as you behave appropriately in public. KyoAni bringing the "cute girls doing cute things" formula to its zenith by simply cutting out as many male characters as possible isn't going to change anything about that.

This is one of the fields I wish the West would learn from Japan in: do as you please in private, uphold certain standards in public.
