The main issue I have with that is that Serval reacted like she recognized the other Serval's voice the first time they heard it (in the hotsprings), but she never reacted like that to Kaban or Mirai's voice recordings. Then the hologram scene has both Mirai and Serval there when we see her crying.

However, the owls in guidebook 3, when talking about Friends generations, mostly talk about how their lifespan (as Friends) isn't eternal and ends when, due to being eaten by a Cerulean or some other incident (They don't explain what it is, maybe the range limit?), they return to animal form, losing their memories as Friends. Then, even if they become Friends again, they won't be the same individual as before, although might have a similar presence. That comment, added with the comparison pictures of the generations of Serval, seem to be strongly pointing to them being the same Serval. On the other hand, the images do avoid saying that anime Serval is the "3rd generation Serval" (note that these numbers are only mentioned by the images, not by the owls), still leaving the connection between them open. Also, although the transition between 1st and 2nd gen Serval is very specific (Cerulean outbreak, battle against the Cerulean Queen), the connection between the 2nd and 3rd one is just "Past event/incident".

Afterwards, they talk about the possibility of different animals of the same type becoming Friends too, and existing at the same time, maybe in other regions, but that one seems to be specifically about Extra Serval considering the picture under the text.

While it's pretty difficult to imagine the manga/game/anime taking place in the same universe, I guess they want to show at least similar events happened in the backstory of the anime.

The anime already had quite a few references to the game and while I didn't really notice anything manga specific it wouldn't surprise me if Nana gets at least mentioned in S2.

What you may be referring to is that they do say that after being eaten by a cerulean, their life is reverted back to how old/young they were before they became Friends. Thus, their life as Friends - what they learned, and memories of what they did or experienced - is essentially (probably) erased from existence. Therefore, they won't be the same. And not only because they're an animal again.

Wew, just finished the anime and I really enjoyed it the whole time. I'm not sure about the ending though, I didn't like that Kaban decided to go off when just a little bit before she said that could wait for later, it felt rushed. But the way they ended it left it open for a second season very nicely.

I think it's likely we'll see more aquatic friends, although I am a little curious about how they would treat a mammal that can't actually live outside the water like a whale or a dolphin or something. Would they get out of the water and walk with Kaban and Serval or would they just direct them from a distance? Maybe Kaban and Serval's first helpful deed in this new land is showing that friend that they can venture onto land if they want to.

I'm not sure, if they did have to fight off non-friend versions of animals they'd likely be much more agressive and less friendly I think. Perhaps Japari Park is surrounded by some sort of netting system or something so that the oceans around it stayed safe? Imagine some kid jumping into the ocean only to get eaten alive by a shark. Or some friend falling into the ocean and getting eaten by a shark. A little risky, although a huge system of nets would be crazy expensive and require constant upkeep. Maybe there are aquatic Bosses that keep up with it since it would've been designed and set up before the park even opened?

I can't remember if it was in the show or in one of these threads, but if a friend gets too far away from the sandstar, do they turn back into whatever animal they were before?

This is a good point. On the other hand, it's pretty clear that their strength level is way beyond normal animals and are also hardier so maybe they just didn't see regular animals as real threats?

The rest of the points are solid though. Especially the aquatic bosses, because at the very least they'd need to deliver food to the Friends who preferred to live in water. On the other hand, the idea of combat Bosses that defend Japari Park from outside threats is also pretty cool.

It wasn't mentioned whether the humans defeated the ceruleans in that manner though. I feel like if the humans knew just dumping water on the ceruleans turned them to stone, they could've just organised some fire fighting planes to bombard the island and stop the big cerulean.

Maybe the animals noticed over time that if the ceruleans got rained on they turned to stone, or that they avoided water, etc.

I wonder what firearms would do to a cerulean. Their bodies aren't solid, so a bullet should be able to pass through and hit the core/stone thing inside them. Most zoos (at least in the US) have firearms to put down dangerous animals if they escape or something, though I guess Japari Park didn't.
