Elq's soul didn't shatter correctly, that's also part of the reason why she isn't completely dead.
Her soul was supposed to shatter in evenly small pieces to strengthen the "curse" on humanity, but her soul split into a few small pieces (the soul pieces that form the faeries) and a large chunk that still belongs to Elq.

I don't really understand a lot of this story, as I was plastered 90% of the time, but the conclusion I'm drawing is that humanityturned themselves into beasts in an attempt to save themselves from total annihilation. The world as it is basically just the result from that going awry, forcing whatever's left alive to fuck off into the sky in what seems to be a fruitless attempt to stave of mass extinction?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it's just all so confusing, even if the fault was of my own making.

Book 5:
Willem and Neph, now turned into half-Beasts, have been separated and are wandering the ruined surface world. Willem's consciousness is fully feral, with occasional flashes of memory, whereas Neph has the urges and desires of a beast but is able to suppress and brush them aside since she isn't human.

An illegal expedition led by the local government behind the Annihilation Knights descends to the surface world, and they discover Willem along with Elq's corpse. They entrap him in sealing barriers, but a debris collision in the sky weakens the barriers and Beast-Willem disintegrates half the airship. The ship crashes onto a sky-island and Willem escapes.

Willem, in a moment of partial clarity, tries to throw himself off the island and die, but fails. His master Nils appears. Nils is a Visitor too, but is from a separate group from Elq and her entourage. Nils casts a sealing spell that seals Willem's beast instincts but also locks his memories up. He takes Elq and Willem and brings them to an inn.

Neph encounters Carmine Lake, the spirit of one of Elq's poteau/guardians, who takes the form of a flying goldfish. He's searching for Elq's body too. Soon they're discovered by Grick, who has accompanied a squad down to retrieve the remains of their failed expedition in Vol.3

Nygglatho is still mourning for Willem and Ctholly, but duty calls: she has been summoned, along with a few of the Fairies, to an urgent meeting with Commander Limeskin. Now that the Timerre attacks have stopped, other islands are staking claim to Fairies too, and want to be given permission to militarize. In particular, the gov. behind the Annihilation Knights wants to make a power play.

Willem is living a normal life with Elq and working at an inn run by Astolfus, a troll who is coincidentally Nygglatho's father. He's apparently in his 50s but youthful-looking. He mentions she's a good girl.

Neph meets Nygglatho and the fairies again. They're shocked by her appearance and what it implies. She tells them what happened.

Neph goes off to the 2nd island, where Suwong and Ebon are, and is never heard from again.

The island where Nygglatho is comes under attack by beasts, unleashed by the Annihilation Knights in a bid for political power. Before Nygglatho's squad can act, the Knights deploy their latest weapon, a mech powered by a living fairy battery.

Willem, who is living on the same island, hears the commotion and investigates. Upon witnessing the tortured fairy battery and the beasts, he regains his memory. To prove that the fairy girls under him are still necessary, he destroys the mech in one blow and engages his former pupils in combat.

Knowing his existence is a threat, he continues his attack on the girls, forcing them to kill him with Seniorious. As his body dissolves, his spirit drifts away...

10 years later, a blue-haired girl falls out of the sky, and is caught by a boy with dark hair.

Originally there were only beasts on the earth, humanity was created by the Visitors (Elq and a few other ones), they split their souls and put a "curse" on the beasts to turn them into humans.
Human population continues to increase, curse weakens since there is only a finite amount of "Visitorsoul" for an increasing amount of humans.
Humans plan to kill the last Visitor (Elq) to increase the power of the curse, here starts the war against Elq's servants where Willem gets petrified.
Assplay kills Elq but her soul doesn't split in the right way to stop the curse from weakening.
The curse breaks humans turn back into beasts and the world goes down the dumpster since the humans were the only race actually capable to kill the beasts.
