I'm fully expecting something like that to happen, although I expect the Straw Hats to catch wind of Big Mom's frenzy before they go back to the Sunny and thus feel like they have to help out. That way they arrive on the scene and see how fucked everything is and they have the option to continue escaping or to help out, the latter making sense if the comments about the arc becoming even more interesting are to be believed.

It could also make for an interesting opportunity to provide Sanji with a powerup, to make sure he reaches Pudding in time or something to that effect. I'm also expecting that, if they go back to help, then he'll be crucial in making a new cake to satiate her, despite the lack of high quality ingredients that Big Mom was talking about.
