up to a point. he was pushing it, then he poked his eye out and the rest of it i couldn't take seriously. i read NHK and was able to empathize with the characters even though I wouldn't ever tread some of their thoughts, but that scene was where things became more about the depiction of things rather than understanding.

i would've forgiven that too, it was definitely a well-conveyed hopeless terror running around from a crime thinking crazy things... but the author did nothing with it in the end. like it was all an exercise.

i think it took me up to the second or third panel of the editor speaking/showing her face that I realized the author was self-inserting as a woman, fairly realistic face on unflattering proportions (contrasted against a handful of attractive female characters) it became immediately obvious that this person was a tranny.

Punpun was written to be on some level relatable, but that doesn't excuse the manga from being total shit. Anyone with a pinch of talent can write a relatable young person because we were all young once.

The whole time I was reading, it felt like the author wasn't trying to tell an interesting story, he was instead trying to manipulate the audience as much as possible. Every character is either a total piece of shit or someone pathetic who has suffering inflicted upon them. In its attempt to be 'harshly realistic' it wound up being exhausting and juvenile. A cynical 20-something's idea of what life is like. Every character is a parody of a real human inserted into trite predictable tragedy porn. Am I missing something?

Though I agree, the problem in Punpun is not so much Pegasus as it is the absurd 'harsh realism' parts such as him being raped.

I think that's a fair enough view of the manga to take. The interviews of Inio Asano that I've read suggest that his motivations are in part to create manga that don't satisfy peoples desire for characters that are good and happy endings. He explicitly state that he had the introduction of Aiko be as much of a stereotypical set up as possible so he could betray people's expectations.

It was an unnecessary and had almost no bearing on the rest of the plot, except to make sure that every character has some grimdark reality beneath their skin. You'll see people try to claim that it explains Punpun's actions as the result of trauma, when in reality it happened because he was a pushover who just lets life happen to him from the beginning.
