Turn A is really far in the future. There are references to past series but they're not required to understand the plot. G-Reco is slightly further in the future of Turn A, it also has some references but again nothing major.

I'm watching it with only having seen 79 before, and I really like it.

You don't need to watch anything else. It's still really good. It's better to just go straight to Turn A than putting it off forever while you wait for yourself to be able to force yourself through the rest. You'll never get to watch it, and miss out on a good anime.

And actually, watching Turn A makes me want to explore more of the Gundam things to get the lore. Turn A is a great starting point.
