The fundamental difference is that pre-F/Z TM works were mostly about waifus and teenage love stories, and the edge and action were effectively window dressing. Fans who started with the VNs or even the DEEN F/SN anime are largely into the franchise for the cute girls and funny moments. After F/Z, the whole franchise put the edge front and center, and fans who came after that are mostly here for the action and mindfuckery. F/Z secondaries have more in common with Death Note or Code Geass fans than they do with the first generation of Fate fans.

Garden of Avalon was fucking great. Nasu still has the thing you're saying is gone. He indulges in other tones because he can because he set the universe up to be versatile enough to have different tones. Grand Order and the whole Extra Line are different BECAUSE they're not in the same "main," universe as Fate and Tsukihime. I don't see anybody bitching about Kara no Kyoukai being to far from Tsukihime and Fate in the opposite direction with the doubling down to almost absurd extents on the dark edgy elements.

Take the writing on its merits instead of bitching that it doesn't "belong." If you think GO is shitty writing, say that instead of GO IS THE DEATH KNELL OF THE FATE FRANCHISE AND HAS BETRAYED EVERYTHING THE ORIGINAL STOOD FOR.

Carnival Phantasm, Prisma, etc. are all sideline spinoffs of the original F/SN VN and not really "part" of post-F/Z TM.

Maybe I'll amend my previous statement, though. It's not the works themselves that changed, it's the fanbase, particularly in the west. People who got into the series after F/Z have very little in common with those who were here before, including gender in many cases. (Everything Fate-related is overrun with fujos now, at least in the West.) F/A looks like it COULD be better, but it's still going to be another "plot show" with too many things going on in too many places with too many characters and not the intimate personal story that defined the VNs and their adaptations.

Speak for yourself. I was here for the early days of Western Fate fandom, when the DEEN anime aired and when the VN translations were coming out. Yeah, the edge and the "deep" shit were always there, but the threads here on /a/ were dominated by waifuposting and the like. I'll admit that calling it a teenage romance story might be selling it a bit too short, but it was definitely different in tone from the follow-up works, primarily in that it was the story of a single main character and a few characters around him and their growth as people, while later mainline stuff is "here's a war and a shitload of people fighting in it and here's what happens in this war."

Nah, if it were it wouldn't be so shoe horned in. The way it handles it is horrible with Jeanne being jealous of him talking to Astolfo or acting like a schoolgirl and the feelings have very little development as they come across from seemingly nothing. Then they try and say it's Laeticia feelings and then Jeanne also has her feelings somehow. That sub plot really did not need to be there.

Ah, the "speak for yourself" was in reaction to the "Apocrypha secondaries" comment, not really disagreeing with the main statement.

I'll come right out and admit that my feelings on the franchise are still heavily tainted by what happened in the fanbase when F/Z came out. "My" comfy little niche fandom was suddenly overtaken by this huge group of people who didn't understand the background of the series, were into it for completely different reasons than me, and who frequently went out of their way to insult the original that I loved. It's still hard to talk rationally about and I realize my posts on the subject are a mess because of it.

One other thing I'll say that really changed about Fate, though: F/SN was a story about a character facing challenges and overcoming them. F/Z and some of the other later works were stories about characters facing challenges and being destroyed by them. I'm not one of those people that enjoys watching characters sink to new lows of misery, which is why I dislike Urobuchi's works in general, and seeing Fate become that kind of series really turned me against the franchise for a long time.

Nasu: It (Normal End) was the only conclusion considered at the time. However, after writing about 2/3 of it, I found that the story itself did not allow such a conclusion. After that, I wrote the original conclusion, and then followed the story and write the happy end. Since this was Shirou's tale of happiness after losing so much, even if Saber and Illya were lost, at least he should let Sakura achieve happiness. And this was the conclusion. Even though Sakura indirectly became a mass murderer, there was no reason to deny her of happiness. I came up with this idea that if one were alive, it was not bad to redeem him/herself while looking forward to happiness. Even though this was hypocrisy, I felt that the story itself strongly demanded this possibility. To be honest, it was the first time that I lost to the story I wrote.

There always feels like an instance where the writer or director really really wants you to feel bad about someone or something kind of out of the blue and they try really hard to push it.

Like, someone getting killed is sad yeah, but then they try really hard to be mean about it. That's the whole fucking bait and switch of FSN though. The premise gets you into it, but the actual story is much more in line with Tsukihime and KnK, focusing on Nasu's original characters.

FGO completely shits on that on every level,and pretty much lives off of the Servant gimmick.
