There was no rivalry. First off, the rivalry between Kaiba and Atem was completely one-sided. Most of Kaiba's character arc was chasing after Atem's back while Atem was always in a superior position. Second, Yugi is not Atem.

Pretty much. Atem was never threatened by Kaiba with the exception of one time, which was basically when Kaiba went "Yugi, if you don't let me win this duel I'll fucking kill myself!" Atem actually did try to win anyway but Yugi said "No, stop, what the fuck are you doing?!" and forfeited the duel.
