Thousands of years from now archaeologists will dig up the remains of ancient society and find your anime collection along with all your figures and merchandise.

They'll use it to determine what life was like back then, what'll they come up with?

If archeologists find any anon's collection, they'll think that people of our time were able to reproduce by putting a man's penis into another man's yaoi hole.
>>
I doubt Archeology will exist in a thousand years. Information is too easily acquired. Ayyliums are a better example.

Archaeologists will be information filtering people or AI.

With the vast amount of raw data out there, it will be difficult to find the important bits of information.

We still know the day by day details of the world since the end of the 18th century, and vast details since before Christ. And it (should) only get better. They'll manage somehow.
>>
>>159583547
The problem is that too much of the modern information is stored in a manner that will be lost quite soon. That is a recent development. After the next great war, this period in time will be the forgotten era, with a few scarce hints, and most of the relevant data lost.

They'll assume there was a small but dedicated global cult dedicated to the worship of an idealized female form. It was centered on an archipelago, but had a diffuse following around the planet. "The idols here indicate that adolescent females with weapons of varying kinds were heavily worshipped, with lesser worship of some armed males and some unarmed females. It is unclear if there was a pantheon containing many different but similar females or if the idols depict differing forms that a smaller number might have taken.

Weapon types are broadly shown to be ranged weapons such as firearms and bows, melee weapons such as swords and polearms, and what appear to be magic wands.

While the ones depicted with ranged or melee weapons are sometimes depicted with relatively utilitarian clothing, overwhelmingly they are depicted in dresses and skirts designed for looks, and often elaborate to the point of appearing impractical for wearing, let alone combat. It is presumed that the figures depicted, be they mythological heroes or goddesses, were skilled or powerful enough that their outfits were of negligible hindrance."

Think for a moment. An almost straight line indicates a drop in fertility at a very peculiar level. Maintaining such a fragile balance between reproduction and population growth would be difficult to maintain under normal conditions. But then you can't forget that the line is describing a filling up of a continent, and that by definition means that conditions MUST change. To still expect a straight development speaks of laziness.

Old 4chan was not about meme production (read: joke, or humorous behavior production).
That's a very modern mentality created by social media because social media sites are actually really awkward for discussion and humor. The best they can do is have humor that comes in little re-postable parcels called "memes" that they can "share" and get likes/upvotes on.
The reason 4chan is looked back on so fondly by so many is because of the atmosphere. When it comes to humor it was more about how the humor was used and why, not about the humor itself. That's also why people looking back at old 4chan memes think it was lame because they are taking it out of context and analyzing it with modern eyes where they're used to just considering each "joke" as its own individual thing instead of considering the whole and how _fun_ it just was to be a part of it as compared to today.

So a site like reddit "stealing our memes" doesn't just mean that they are adopting our humor. They are one of those social media sites that take shit and make it lame because the format of reddit is to turn all humor into these little karma-farmable pills they can swallow.

tl;dr all the memes on 4chan today are devoid of the cultural significance that older ones possessed so the quality has gone down the shitter.

It also doesn't help that the mod team doesn't flush over used memes to help spur the things being created. This why we're stuck with Wojack and Pepe after complete saturation and them going mainstream.

Somewhere around 2009, I'd say. Before then memes could never be "too big to fail". No meme was ever "saved" from fading into obscurity or becoming cringe material, not even the really big ones. Even Pepe's not the same meme it was back in the day, I mean how often do you see someone post "feels good man" nowadays?

Today we have memes acting as de facto mascots for numerous boards and websites, including 4chan. People place meaning in these memes, they've become invested in them. The only thing like that from the old days was Anonymous and its various iconography, and that stuff was created for that kind of purpose (and ended up becoming cringy anyway). Memes like Pepe, rage comics, and wojack were not. Eventually it all starts to seem forced, like someone's afraid of what will happen if it falls out of use.

False equivalence.
A thousand years ago they had swords, and they understood the art of sword-making pretty well. There was still lots of room for improvement, because metallurgy wasn't optimal yet. But if somebody said "in the future somebody will make a sword that'll cut 1000 times as good as what you have now, it would have been wrong.
I am not an expert on electronics, but I am pretty sure we are far enough on the curve of processors that we can no longer expect to speed them up by a factor of 1000 any more.
Same for cars. Sure, there's room for improvement. But they will never go 1000 times faster than they are going now.
>>
>>159615373
>Same for cars. Sure, there's room for improvement. But they will never go 1000 times faster than they are going now.

Why shouldn't they improve? A car is just the modern version of a cart so in the future we'd definitely have something better. 110,000 KM/H is perfectly fine for a max speed limit between the Earth and the Moon. At that speed it'd take ~3.5 hours to drive there.

Nearly all future predictions end up being wrong. Merely 50 years ago people had an entirely different vision of how the world would look in the year 2000. Laser weapons, hoverboards, holograms and robot butlers/maids walking among us. People also expected computers to get bigger in size.

Reality went down a different route though, for example we ended up focusing on making computer parts as small as possible, and instead of holograms we went with touchscreen. And sure, all the things I mentioned technically "exist" but there's hardly any plans or economic strength on making them usable by the average person. (Or mass producing them.) Also Moore's law has already long started hitting diminishing returns, as some other anon mentioned quantum technology is what people are placing their bets on next.

It's sad but technological advancement requires a lot of uncertain variables, you never know when some crazy east european in his basement will come up with some million dollar formula that revolutionizes how we interact with technology and push the industry focus on that field in particular. (In favor of other fields) All we can do is wait and see, it's never a good idea to make plans with non-existent technology, like all those poor sods who live on shitty diets, smoke, drink etc. and expect scientists to "cure old age in 50 years, I'm sure".

Progress will end and even reverse with the depletion of high net-energy resources that made technological progress and rising living standards possible in the first place. Energy is not technology after all. It can't be created, only transformed from low-entropy resources that have high potency for going useful work into a high-entropy state that's generally useless and called waste-heat. That's one general trend we can be relatively certain of, given that we've been observing the early stages of it for the last 40 or so years.

Fossil fuels were a unparalleled one-time treasure that produced a one-time miracle for humanity. The world won't end after they are gone or there only remain uneconomical reserves, it just won't be the colonizing the stars and technological singularity fantasy the religious believers in endless progress imagine the future to be. Imagine the future in a few centuries more like a medieval society with more advanced technology (but more primitive than what we have today) where it's economically feasible and appropriate.

Honestly it won't be that bad after a period of some difficult adjustment and population decline. Realizing the impermanence of our own age and society also helps to appreciate the current times a bit more I think.

I read a fascinating blog a physicist psted about his conversation with an economist. It was really an eye-opener on how different viewpoints on the model of economy we have going and their future can be.

An example would be:
Econ- The economy can still grow without using up much resources by expanding into the virtual sector.
Phy- Ok, but where does the energy required to keep up this virtual sector come from, and what stops me from buying material goods with my virtual dollars?

Irrc the economist could not give a solid answer because they hate the thought of gov making laws to outlaw spending habits/purchasing power more than cancer.

I did like Kemono Friends a lot, but it didn't shape my worldview. I just love the heartwarming interactions it shows and found the post-apocalyptic setting very intriguing. It's interesting that japan makes stories about the world after the fall, showing it's not the end, compared to apocalyptic western stories where there's generally one huge threat that will end humanity or the world completely unless we do something about it.

Yes, that article illustrates the clashing beliefs of different fields very well. Modern economics is a field that was developed entirely in the (aberrant) period we had massive economic growth and is kind of stuck in its ivory tower when it comes to what will happen to the economy beyond cheap energy. Physicists and other scientists who deal more with provable laws and facts about reality have realized a long time ago that economic activity is very tightly linked to energy use.

To grow and produce more tangible goods and services that improve living standards you need more net-energy. That's almost such a basic observation it boggles the mind how economists try to obfuscate it and pretend it's not real to keep their faith in infinite growth on a finite planet going. When net-energy declines, so does the economy and standard of living. That's reality.

We're researching nuclear fusion though. It's highly possible that we'll have plenty of energy thanks to that. Most likely not by 2025 but I think it's going to happen. Damn son! Moore's law was about the transistorcount on integrated circuits, not about technology as a whole. You use the nuclear energy to produce electricity (like we've been doing for he last 30 years) and then use that electricity to power electrecity stations to power your car batteries. (like we've been doing since electric cars have been created)
There are already cities that have a network of places where you can park your car and charge it.

Net-energy of the energy resources themselves has been declining ever since the first chunk of coals was mined and the first barrel of oil was pumped. The easy stuff (= takes the least amount of energy to get) is extracted first after all.

The gross amount of net-energy that matters for your and mine day to day standard of living (net-energy per capita) peaked around 1970 or so. That year, on average and for society as a whole, the tokens you got for a year of work could buy you the highest standard of living ever achieved by humanity. Ever since it's been slowly downhill, masked by technological progress that is still increasing but increasingly more unaffordable. Just like many other things that once seemed standard for a middle-class lifestyle like graduating without debt, buying a house and paying back the mortgage in 5 years or actually saving for retirement.

Open your eyes because we're already living in the decline. It will continue on and accelerate for about a century and then level of and stabilize at a sustainable level of population and energy-use. There will be periods of more stability mixed in with periods of upheaval and more noticeable decline along the way but probably no sudden the-world-is-ending type events.

If we've colonised some/most of the solar system then being able to travel to satellites in a couple of hours via "space car" and nearby planets in a 20 hour "space plane" or a 2 week "space cruise" would be pretty good.
>>
>>159619518
>>159619572
It's cheaper and more efficient to mine trace-elements out of seawater and bare soil than it is to "mine" asteroids. You must have no idea how vast the amount of energy required is for a craft to leave earth's gravity well, grab an asteroid, mine it and bring the resources back. Magnitudes more inefficient than the worst techniques we have on earth. And then we're also ignoring all the rocket fuel lost to the void of space. Even though this is all technically possible on paper, it's completely sci-fi and unworkable in reality, let alone a realistic and sustainable solution.

Study some hard science first instead of reading popular-science news. Maybe pick up such a magazine from 50 years ago and read how "IN 20 YEARS NUCLEAR FUSION WILL FLY US TO THE STARS". Point is these magazines/sites give a really warped image of development of new technology. Feasible in the lab is far far faaar removed from economically feasible in the real world.

I've lost count of how often I've read about "the next big breakthrough in battery tech discovered that will REVOLUTIONIZE the world" in the last 10 years or so. Still waiting btw.

Gas giants don't provide good foundation to build houses on. If you're going to be drifting in orbit anyway, what's the point of orbiting a planet so far out that you're constantly cold?
>being able to travel to satellites in a couple of hoursbeing able to travel to satellites in a couple of hours
Correct. But accelerating too fast for too long just makes for a bad experience, and might be unhealthy besides. Just accelerate a bit slower, thereby saving resources and not feeling like crap at the end of the trip.

Let's take a look at those ancient fictions:
>Many of these contests, if done by human beings, would be a matter of life and death. In one contest the two youths try to outwit one another. This contest includes a homosexual attempt by Seth and a revenge by Horus. In the course of this contest both youngsters prove that they are indeed post-pubescent by producing semen.
>Isis seems to be aware of the importance not just of semen production, but its placement or role in the coming-of-age ceremony. She goes through the ritual masturbation of her son to produce that semen. He has Horus place his own semen on the lettuce patch so that Seth ingests it.
>Back in court, Seth declares that “I have done a man’s deed to him.” Literally, “I did work and fight to him,” where kAt, ‘work’ is written as its homonym, kAt, ‘vagina’, so it ends up reading, literally, I did a vagina fight to him. However we translate aHA, ‘to fight’, it implies the use of force in this male contest. This contest ends with a ritual calling forth of these young men’s semen with all the deities present. Seth’s semen ends up discarded in the marshes. Horus’s semen, in Seth’s belly, transforms into a golden sun disk that Thoth appropriates for himself.

It blows my mind how Trump is sabotaging re-newable energy initiatives in America and wanting coal to still be a major player when in places where coal is king like West Virginia, only 900 people are employed to actually mine because it's all automated now. Not that natural gas is any better because extracting it causes earthquakes (See Oklahoma, the head of the EPA believes that 600 man made earthquakes a year is fine when he was working for the state.)

Yes, you need resources to make renewable energy work, and it's not a silver bullet, but undermining it is not the answer.
