People buy the BDs as collector items and for the bonuses. The lack of BD sales indicate it didn't do well with the hardcore market. Now, that might not be needed if it went well with the normalfag market, but we have no idea how to judge that.

However getting the mainstream, becoming modern anime ghibli/disney/harry potter thing starring cute little witches of all shapes races and sizes would sell on an international stage.

It had all it needed to be popular with everyone and become one of those "you can watch this" type shows for little girls that parents and women love to tout so much.

Problem is that they decded to at the last second to push the character that was stripped of anything that made her liked in the first place and not even subtly pushed hardcore yuri in an attempt to pull in the audience that STILL doesn't give a shit. Bad fucking call trigger.
