To me a 5/10 is a show that I won't necessarily drop, but one that I wouldn't have started watching in hindsight. Since I complete and enjoy the vast majority of shows that I choose to watch, most of my shows are at a minimum 6/10, and usually 7 or 8. Why would I watch equally many 1/10s as 10/10s? The answer is I wouldn't, because I would have dropped the former on the first episode. Sorry for the autism but number ranking isn't an objective measure so there's nothing wrong with inflation.

These are your dead ringers for the season out of the new shows so far - only five of them. Everything else is up in the air right now. A few shows that have aired could get better in subsequent episodes and a few shows that haven't aired yet could turn out better than I am anticipating, but probably not. I'm also not getting much of a good campy vibe from the second tier anime that would let me enjoy something on the premise of a "it's so bad, it's good" or "it may be shit, but it's fun shit" sort of thing (maybe Knights and Magic, maybe Kakegurui, but it's too early to tell).

Last season, we had at least ten excellent anime, twice as many.

I mean, hell. Spring even had a Chinese flash animation short that managed to be really fun to watch (pic related).

Comparatively, summer is looking a little bleak so far. I know not all of the shows have aired yet, but what else is there? The half cour of Owarimonogatari? The centaur anime that's being made by Haoliners? The gyaru themed short? You still would come up short against the spring season. Maybe when the rest of Zaregoto comes out, people will be able to marathon that at long last, filling the void of missing good anime in their lives?

They'll probably get an explanation of how the abyss works and then prepare to enter it next episode. I don't mind if they rush through this part since the town stuff really isn't important or representative of what the rest of the story is like besides grounding the setting. MiA will likely be the kind of show a lot of people drop and then get interested in again halfway through when there's more action. I've seen some thinking it'll be episodic in nature, so I'll say there's a definite plot with a constant sense of progression.

as a fan of the manga I'm overall positive towards the anime, but I have a few quibbles. when the character art was first revealed I thought it looked like ass, but in motion it looks fine and I'm thankful we won't have to guess what male character is being shown since they won't all look the same. I don't know what I was expecting considering the source material, but there's really not a lot of animation. it's basically the manga in color with voice acting. there's nothing wrong with that, but I don't know if I like how the cut to black and white reactions shots are done, plus I know I'm not a fan of the text for the sound effects. it's just not needed and seems out of place
like I said, minor nigglings. so far the voice acing has been fantastic with only kaji being significantly different from how I imagined, but I think her voice does fit

Isekai Shokudou was the biggest surprise, I did not expect to like it because I hate anything Isekai.

Fate is maybe lower than it should be because I just re-watched Fate/Stay Night and am kind of burned out.

Not that anon, but the staff list for MiA is impressive. They got Osamu Masuyama (ex-ghibli guy, CEO of Inspired which did FliFla and Your Name backgrounds) on art direction, Yoshinari Kou on creature design, they also got director of Monster to direct this, and Kevin Penkin on music, along with other big names.

Kinema Citrus is in the committee; they have a personal stake in making this a success, along with Cygames of all things (mostly because a certain someone in there liked the manga a lot), so budget isn't an issue.

I simply can't picture them fucking this up.

I think this was me. Only reason is that the Fate franchise is a known quantity, but I know nothing about Abyss and the first episode was kind of a basic intro, didn't feel like the story started yet. Reading the thread and finding out the kind of staff Abyss has working on it, I am very hopeful.

The first episode starts you off with orphan children getting exploited by a mining company. The MC sleeps in a torture chamber. The kids were almost eaten alive by a giant snake and we're still in the starting town.

The art is great, the animation was good except for the snake. The snake looked terrible. Soundtrack was a hit. I prefer instrumentals, but that's down to preference.

As for the content of the episode, it's an introduction to the setting. It doesn't really pick up until they leave the town, so you really need to stick around until they do to give it a proper rating. Those who have seen ahead rate it higher than those who haven't.
