It's not a character assassination. It's more a look at two characters taking different routes through life. Both had neet tastes and aspirations although Tomoko's fantasies about becoming popular typically revolve around being sexually appealing but we don't really see what nemo thinks so it's hard to gauge. It's kind of a critique on society since even when she fantasizes about being smart to get popular, her fantasy self-image is large breasted with a short skirt.

Anyway, Tomoko has traversed the phase where she's realised that the things she used to worry about are trivial and meaningless to the point where her fantasy of going back and repeating it to be popular would tire her out and she's happy being a loner. She gets headpatted and doesn't freak out or think anything of it beyond her old self would have went crazy over it.

Nemo, however, is a social conformist denying her own ambition, interests and betraying her friends so she can be "popular".

That's what the series is ultimately critiquing though. Tomoko has friends. Nemo does not. Tomoko is content with herlsef. Nemo is not. Who really is the biggest loser here?

The entire point of the chapter is examining their relationship after Tomoko found out she likes anime. Nemoto says she hates the anime Tomoko likes, then immediately makes it clear she didn't mean anything with a "it's too bad we don't have anything in common". Tomoko, being the spiteful type, still takes offense to it and decides to outrun her as payback. Nemoto, being in a sports club, takes it as a challenge and the two of them end up in a full-on race. At the end of the race, Tomoko is pissy because she wanted to win without effort, while Nemoto is surprised that she pushed herself so hard trying to keep up.

Then Nemo realizes that even though they don't share taste in anime, they do have something in common: they both really hate that damn teacher.


The whole chapter takes on a different tone when Tomoko has a reason to be offended over Nemoto calling an anime she likes garbage.

Back in the early chapters, Tomoko would put her hair up in twintails whenever she tried to disguise herself as a social girl. Nemu sports a variation of the hairstyle, made more apparent by her middle school look. It's symbolic that Nemu is what would happen if Tomoko was actually successful in becoming a normalfag at the beginning of the series.

Nemu was initially nice to Tomoko because she had empathy for the pathetic girl. That time they ate lunch together, Nemu came to a horrifying realization. Tomoko was an awkward girl claiming to want to be voice actress and all of the friends Nemu worked so hard to conceal her powerlevel around instantly took to liking her. Not only that, but Tomoko gave zero shits about whether or not Nemu's friend circle liked her, instead deciding to stick to her own people. Nemu realized that she wasn't what would happen if Tomoko had been successful in her attempts to become a normalfag, Tomoko is what would have happened if Nemu had been herself.

Nemu considers Tomoko a friend, but deep down she's offended by her existence. Tomoko is living proof that Nemu's life is wrong. It's understandable that she's bully Tomoko when she can.

In Japanese you don't tell someone you "hate" what they like unless you are 5 years-old or trying to make a really strong statement about their tastes. Beyond that, the text is in fucking bold, which is a common way of indicating that there is a certain type of emphasis indicating meaning beyond just her literal words.
