It was intentionally added to remind the audience that this is a work of fiction. Because without it, it would be possible to take it too seriously by audiences. The giant ships remind everyone to suspend their disbelief about other things, like why no one got killed.

Hell- even if you didn't like the show - the movie was on an entirely different level and is one of my all time favorite anime spectacles. Contextually it hits harder than something like RedLine and has emotional investment on top of that. Just the artillery scene alone is one of the best "hype" scenes in anime. I can only imagine how much fun the studio had in making that movie.

I was going to go on an autistic rant about the ships, but then in the end i realized i really don't really care, It keeps it in the same sort of class as the other ww2 girls anime. And the entire concept of cute girls fighting each other in world war two vehicles is kind of retarded anyways. Its just a fun dumb action show with references to tanks and ships instead pop culture. and that's OKAY. because its great.

And at least a tanks anime shows off tanks more often than not. I'm a fan of strike witches and it always annoyed me that for a series based around air aces, they showed off more of the navy than much of any airforce.
