Kino no Tabi is getting a new anime despite the first season being from 2003. Mushishi got a second season almost 10 years after the first and 6 years after the source material ended.

It's too old and too much of a niche series to justify investment in a new anime. If it was marketable, believe me, they'd pick animation over new LN volumes in the spot.
The difference between those series and S&W is the ridiculous amount of new content introduced in all the LN volumes. No way you can possibly fit all these new characters and arcs in 2-cours. You can't simply gut (e.g.) Cole or the Narwhal rhapsody from the anime without creating huge plot holes and shit.
Between a trainwreck of a 3rd season and the way it's now, I'm happy they're leaving it alone.

I also bet Kadokawa and Pony Canyon are more interested in milking moe franchises.
