I really have a problem with this character design.
Its like the designer has vague memory of FLCL and thought "oh quirky random characters? I can do that" and just added an unnecessary element to a normal design.
FLCL's main cast all looked normal and casual outside of Canti and to an extent Haruko, and even Canti tried to fit in by wearing clothes despite being a robot.

Could be good, could be shit. who knows.

Either way I'll end up watching it. It has a lot of the same people doing it. They're having The Pillows do an original score for FLCL2+3 which they didn't even do with the first one. Both FLCL2 and FLCL3 are their own stories which is better than ruining a self-contained story that was FLCL1.

The animation and character design looks kinda bland but we only saw 30 seconds of it. Hopefully they'll have a lot of avant-garde animation sequences (but different) like the original.

Yeah it was, although Ride on Shooting Star was written for the anime. So I'm guessing Spiky Seeds will be the new ED for at least the 2nd season, or they're going with a traditional style OP unlike the original and that will use the song. So much of the FLCL animation was frantic due to the animators trying out all sort of different digital techniques. It was literally experimental at times.

The only way they could capture the same feeling is if they gather several young animators and just let them go wild, thats not gonna happen. Being pessimistic, think most of it will look as generic and bland as the main girl and they will have sakuga scenes here and there for the sake of being sakuga scenes which will just make it feel artificial.

I'm still pretty sure it'll be unnecessary and more bad than good will come of it, but I think the trailer at least gives us as much reason to be cautiously optimistic as it gives for pessimism.
The designs haven't been TOO ruined by the modernization, the music seems to still be on point and the animation still seems to be expressive and bombastic, plus I think the absence of Naota is a really positive thing. These are all good signs.
The weird choice of director and the absence of Gainax are the most worrying new factors, but even the retarded cat-ear headphone shit can be spun into either a negative or a positive thing depending on how optimistic you are; given the type of show the original was it could very well be the kind of thing they're going to use to hammer the new girl on about how immature she is. It does look like it'd be way too heavy handed compared to the baseball bat though.

In the trailer the glasses boy and Haruko look much closer to the original art style, nothing like this girl, who looks generic as fuck. The thing is, the new guy also feels like a FLCL character, and, obviously, so does Haruko, but this girl doesn't, and she isn't supposed to.
She probably lives a placid, lonely and isolated life, as indicated by the headphones, a clear symbol of isolation.
It's noted several times in FLCL1 that the town is terribly boring. And unlike Naota, she probably has no close friends, a love interest, a brother to look up to, a fuck up dad or even a sport to practice, to spice up her piddly existence. We even see her using the computer in a dark room for fuck sakes. For all that matters, she's a background character.
She lives a shitty life, indifferent to everything, even with giant monsters before her, she just stands there still. Her story is gonna be about moving taking control of your own life, and how Haruko and her new friend are gonna help her start. We even see him, someone who has life, as indicated by the artstyle, drag her around at a certain point, but only when she starts doing things by herself she's gonna be able to be alive, and finally stop being a generic anime girl. I imagine that's gonna be her equivalent of Naota's forehead boner.

Me. Since FLCL was OVAs, it was easier for fansubbers to sell it (on VHS, back then) fairly close to the release in Japan. I think I watched OVAs 1 and 2 in mid 2000, then the rest in early 2001.
In fact, I got to order OVA 6 directly from gainax's onlien shop in 2001, got the first press DVD edition, came with english subs and a shiny cardboard packaging. Still have it.

When FLCL first came on adult swim way back in, I discovered it in, what feels like, just the right age frame to watch and enjoy it.

Like Naota, I didn't really "understand" what was going on with the "strange pink haired girl" but found her attractive, i.e. "loved her" and had an older brother that people were always interested in and comparing me to.

So re-watching it as i'm older I can see why it appealed to me when I was younger even though I didn't fully understand why at the time.

That kid in me kind of wants the new seasons to be good and have the same kind of spark that drew me in, even if the themes it covers are different.

But if it's not good it's still okay, because i'll still remember how much I enjoyed the original.

I was actually hopeful for the animation side of things, but the initial synopsis killed my enthusiasm for the writing because it confirmed heavy leaning on the original and following up shit that didn't need answers "why is Canti important, what about Medical Mechanics and their space war, etc." The trailer's sterility just makes me pretty confident that we're going to be looking at bursts of strong animation instead of a continual stream of experiments, which was the strength of the original. I'm not pretending I must be right, I just think that's a reasonable conclusion given the cross section we've seen.

I think the issue is that dragging out Ashi's disappearance for drama doesn't really do much. It would've worked better if Jack killed Aku, started to celebrate, turned around, and Ashi was gone. Leave it on a sobering note about how he saved the world and the future, but he erased a big part of his life (not just Ashi, but everything that he experienced in Aku's future) to bring about that miracle.

That said, no Pillows is a complete dealbreaker for a HUGE swath of the fanbase, and some would argue that their aesthetic is the one truly inseparable ingredient in the FLCL dish.
