Why are there no good animes grounded in realism that address Japanese history? It's not as if Nip history isn't surprisingly interesting, or bereft of interesting characters, but it seems both authors and the public are afraid to engage with a topic that seems to already have a built in audience.

There are a lot of Senkoku Jidai manga, older stuff.
I guess before that is blurry, and Modern stuff includes the War.

I would love a historically accurate WWII anime, but I guess its still too touchy of a subject...

First off,
>animes
You're a faggot and should lurk more.
Second off, there are some, so you should really lurk more.
Finally, they're not common just because it's not a topic people associate with anime. No one's "afraid" of engaging with it, they just do it in doramas, stage plays, manga, etc. Just like josei dramas almost never get anime, just like battle shounen don't get doramas, just like Western animation doesn't do a lot of period pieces either, etc. I don't get why people always ask questions like this, honestly.
