I am going to seriously answer just in case you really didn't know.

There is a culture of viewing women as being undesirable in Japan after a certain age. This is not unique to Japan by any means, but Japan codified it by a famous saying that "no one wanted a Christmas cake after the 25th of Dec."

The argument is that any Christmas cake still on sale after Christmas is not fresh and no one would buy them. And the implication is that women need to get cooked up by their 25th birthday or they would drop off the dating market.

As I mentioned earlier, this is not as true as it used to be because the dating market is shrinking. There are just too many women who outright don't date any-more. So Japan as a people have reluctantly raised that cutoff to 31.
