I finally went and saw this movie yesterday and I want to discuss it now
I thought it was amazingly Good, I loved every second of it. The story was nice and beautiful, the art looked nice, the soundtrack was great and the animation was good.I thought the movie was going to end badly, but then the happy ending happened and I was overjoyed

>>159256649
We are truly blessed to have her
It was good but I was a bit annoyed about that neither of the mains noticed the year gap. I get that their memory would be a bit fuzzy after they get into their own bodies, but there is literally no problems when they are in each others.
It didn't ruin the movie, though.
>>159257077
It's a minor inconsistency, and the director himself has admitted it as well
But it didn't bother me that much
>>159257196
I wouldn't call the twist of the movie (or at least a huge part of the twist) a minor inconsistency.

>>159257077
IMO this can easily be eplained.

conversation ended months ago. until BDs come out and more people can examine them frame by frame in details, what is there left to say? It's a good movie that became an unexpected hit, directed in standard shinkai fashion except 1) standard movie runtime and 2) happy, conclusive ending. if anyone here even remotely believes that shinkai can become the next miyazaki, they are deluding themselves.
>>159259436
I've never understood the thing about calling people the next something, instead of just letting them be their own personas
And since I just saw the film I wanted to discuss It, I don't even usually go to this board
>>159259727
It's not wrong to want to discuss something this popular, just that you have to specify what is it that interests you rather than say "I think it's amazing", after exactly 1 year of initial release and countless threads doing the exact same thing
>>159260204
I see your point
Well it's hard for me to pinpoint a single thing that interested me the most in the film, it was the collective of the good things in it that made it great for me. Though when I think about I suppose the story was my favourite thing about it, especially the ending
>Drinking rice wine made from someone else's mouth

Well how else are you gonna travel 3 years back in time into the body of a highschool girl to save the people of tee city including herself from dying in a blast by a comet falling to the ground?

The girl was old and busted in by the time the guy found her again. He gave up sexy sempai for her.
That's not a happy ending. That's sloppy seconds.

Not always, especially in Japan. Almost half of the adults are still virgins. Breeding depression is a very real thing there. It's not hard to imagine that she didn't go giving it away like candy considering the traditional upbringing. It's not like she went "backpacking in Europe" amirite?

>>159257077
It is my belief that Taki noticed on the day that he went up and delivered the kuchikamizake to Musubi because he would have seen the comet after Hitsuha said "are you dreaming now?", but for reasons he completely lost that memory.
Because after she says those words the LN and the movie both cut to him suddenly waiting up with tears in his eyes.
For Mitsuha, I don't think it would have really mattered if she noticed the year gap, they were in the middle of swapping bodies, which is impossible enough, that I don't think it would have been a big deal to her, and she didn't know about the comet destroying her hometown for it to be significant.
>>159262189
>fiction is always the same as reality!
It's pretty clear, from the movie, from the LN and from the manga, that she was in the same state as Taki, constantly searching for some special person she knew she had to find.

I saw this movie recently and it is incredibly mediocre.
What if Makoto Shinkai's follow-up for this is Keit-Ai for real?
>A boy falls in love with a girl.
>Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number.
>Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
>But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression.
>After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with.
>In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
>Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves.
>While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

I loved the part where he went on like 8 job interviews and got rejections from them all. Because at the time I was also job searching, and it made me feel better as stupid as that sounds. Last week, I finally got 2 job offers, accepted both, and thought back to this movie when I got them.
I love string instruments, especially piano and violin (viola and other bowed instruments) so I love a lot of the Kimi no Na wa music.
One touch I love on the soundtrack is that you can tell the piano recording is done with a microphone at a piano because you can hear the sound of the keys and the pedals. It is a wonderful little touch.
My favorites among the OST are 御神体, 三葉のテーマ and the デート derivatives and かたわれ時.

Dumb buzzword. KNNW is better than anything Miyazaki has done in ages.
>>159257077
Well, I've explained it to others this way. If you saw a calendar that had the wrong date, what do you think? Time travel, or someone fucked up?
The time gap isn't an obvious conclusion and really only apparent in hindsight. In one scene Mitsuha explicitly states there's a comet in the sky, basically telling him it's 3 years ago, and Taki is just confused. Thinks she made a typo or fucking around or something.
Because even in weird supernatural circumstances, your mind doesn't obviously jump to time travel as the first answer.

>I thought the movie was going to end badly, but then the happy ending happened and I was overjoyed
I knew it was going to have a happy ending, because /a/ spoiled it for me prior to the US theatrical release. And even knowing that, I was still on the edge of my seat, gripping my arm wrest during the climax. I had been Shinkai'd so often, I just couldn't fathom the movie ending in a satisfactory way. And when they passed each other on the bridge, I really thought that was going to be it.
>>159283909
If you pay attention or remember the beginning of the movie then it should be obvious that it will have a happy ending because once you get into that Taki five years later part it's like the setting up for that beginning "sometimes I wake up with tears in my eyes", "there's someone I have to meet" and then when it returns to that part and you realize that it is that day from the beginning, that day when they finally meet. It's like pottery.
It's just such a ride getting back to the beginning, especially on the first watch it could be easy to miss or forget.
I saw it about a month ago never having heard a single thing about it going in. Normally love stories are nice for a moment but you forget about them quickly, but this one stuck with me. 10/10 fully intend to buy when it comes out.

>>159284478

>>that moment of relief when Taki turns around and calls out to Mitsuha

It was especially meaningful as a longtime Shinkai fan because it was a defiance of 5cms per second's ending. I felt like I got closure for that too.
>>159285719
The end of the LN is great because the whole novel had constantly switched between Taki and Mitsuha's viewpoints over long stretches, but in the epilogue they switch every other sentence until they finally meet and speak at the same time with their lines written on the same row.
>>159285938
https://fgilantranslations.com/kimi-no-na-wa/
>>159285950
You're right, but you're not quite right because the prologue is much like the epilogue, switching every other sentence and saying the final sentence (I am searching for someone, a single, specific, person) together.
That's another thing I prefer the LN over. In the movie they are switching between each other for the lines but that line is said by Mitsuha alone I think, and then it carries on and Taki says the line about "ever since that night when the stars fell from the sky" which makes no sense at all because his search started three years later.
>>159286096
Thank you!

It probably was a lot better for Shinkai fans, but it was still very good for me too. Truly a beautiful story.
Why is Yen Press so fucking slow with the Earthbound novel? Taiwan, Thailand, and I think even Vietnam all have it already.
>>159286203
No. I would kinda like a scan of it myself so I don't have to use the book itself but I didn't see any reliable scans out there.
A lot of the songs have been transcribed to varying degrees of accuracy. I suppose I could look for the best ones now that I have the official sheet music to compare with.
>>159286286
I'm kinda two minds on the Earthbound novel so far, up to the Yotsuha part.
First part about Taki in Mitsuha's body is okay, just expands on some of the events we get snippets of in the first LN and movie, and a bit more.
Second part about Teshigawara sorta explains why he went along with Mitsuha (Taki)'s plan so easily but the way his character is expanded didn't match the impression I got from the LN and movie.
Reminder that the best version of Nandemonaiya is the one sung by Mitsuha:

I watched Koe no Katachi today and thought it was better. Slim margin, but it actually benefited with less visuals because it focussed on the characters development more. Sad it got slept on because of Your Name now...
>>159285719
Call me old fashioned, but I like the male character taking the initiative.
>>159286901
I like the idea that they both couldn't stand that thought of letting the meeting pass as it seems to fit their words in the prologue and epilogue more.
It's probably likely that the idea is that they both thought the other person would make the first move if they really knew the person.

They're both very good and I get the feeling that I wouldn't have been disappointed if Tenmon had done the music instead, certainly it would have been different but considering how well they did in the previous movies I'm sure it still would have fit and sounded wonderful.
Perhaps Radwimps have a style that more suited this movie or perhaps they offered a whole package of being able to do the songs as well as the BGM side.

I also like the way Taki took the initiative, but the other ending the LN has is also good. It does really make sense that they both couldn't hold themselves and turned around at the same time. But there's still something about the movie's ending that makes me like it
>>159287657
Seriously though it's like five times hotter than if it were just Mitsuha.
>>159287612
Perhaps it is the symmetry in how when they first met (on the train) Mitsuha made the first move, and their second meeting Taki makes the first move.
Of course, Taki wouldn't have made the first move on the train because he didn't know her then, but still.

There is some fairly clear memory repression/fiddling going on by Musubi. He doesn't remember the name of the town in his own body, he doesn't even recognize the photos at the Hida exhibition as being the town Mitsuha lived in when he was on the date with Okudera (though it felt familiar to him). He even notes in the LN in the ramen shop after the realization that it was the town hit by a comet that it is part of the school curriculum now.
And then there's also >>159264622. The trigger for the body swap is while they sleep so he must have seen the comet on that night and there was something that made him wake up as if he had seen a nightmare.
Also, also, they don't mention it in the movie at the start of the body swap shenanigans collage, but he had her phone number in his phone later though, but they tried to call each other and it didn't work so that would discourage trying to meet. And the trip would have been something like 5 hours each way and $200-250.

It was okay. Needed more heartfelt moments during bodyswap, it's not really convincing when they fall in love. Mitsuha being dead is a good twist. The entire sequence afterwards lasts a bit too long. Not showing her final confrontation with her father was a terrible idea, and isn't satisfying. Artstyle was disappointing, looked pretty generic compared to Shinkai's other works, which all had a bit of a pastel style to them.
I liked the movie but was a bit let down after the hype. My fault, I guess.
>>159299243
I don't know, to me it seemed reasonable fall in love, since they were so close to each other and knew so much about each other. I didn't think there was anything unnecessary in the sequence after the twist, and showing the final confrontation with her dad doesn't seem necessary, and by doing that it keeps it a secret a while longer that most of the people survived. And I don't know what you thought was wrong with the artstyle, it looked good to me

She spends the entire film getting shit on by her dad. It would've been extremely cathartic to see her finally let it all out in him.

Garden of Words had a mesmerizing effect during all of the park scenes, where outlines would change colour depending on light source. The whole film used light sources beautifully. While your name had incredibly detailed backdrops it never did anything unique like that aside from the sake scene. It didn't look bad, but Shinkai is normally more creative.

I feel like showing that scene might have spoiled some of the surprise

Is there any other anime/manga that does body swap like this?
It was the best part really.
>>159302054
As in the people swapping bodies don't know each other and live far apart? I'd like to know too
>>159302168
Body swap as a genre. Its mostly found in doujins, but its a trope which I think is underused.
>>159302345
Yeah, true. Seeing more bodyswap anime would be nice

tee city?
You mean Itomori?
>Taki writes on Mitsuha's hand
>Mitsuha trips and sees "I love you"
This bit really got me
>>159303222
Meant to say "the city"
And yeah
>>159303390
That scene was so good and touching
Also
>Mitsuha was also going to write "I love you" on Takis hand judging from the vertical line she drew before she was interrupted

Was this movie really that good? I enjoyed the visuals and the story was alright but nothing really stood out to me as being absolutely fantastic.
I did watch it on a plane though, is it one of those movies you should watch twice to see shit you missed?
I'm very surprised and very happy that this thread lasted this long
