I get what they're going for with the redesigns, and I think that it speaks to a lack of understanding as to why QB is over-the-hill.

Nobody wanted a darker and edgier QB, and the designs for Grimoire have been terrible. Inferior redesigns of the original cast is just putting dirt on the grave. If they were going to insist on not using Rin Sin's designs in order to signal that this was a rebirth, they should have grabbed a popular artist in a similar vein. Yaegashi Nan, Tsunako, etc.

On the plus side Reina no longer has the downs, so that's good.

Nowa now looks less like a small titty orangutan, but more like a Tony Taka character, so that's a draw there.

I do not approve of Elina losing her tiger stripes, and Melpha now looks more like a dumb, generic RPG character and less like someone's mom Larping as one, which kills the boner.

Everyone else is fine, really.

It looks like they "cleaned" up the designs and made everything shinier, but it only made the designs even more bland and forgettable. Echidna is the only one that kind of works.

I really miss F.S.'s art and Oda Non's.

From the original the only girls of any note were Risty, Echidna, Cattelya and Menace anyways. The yandere sister's antics were somewhat fun though her design was unremarkable.

The rest of the girls are forgettable and blend in with so many others from a myriad of similar series. They should have identified their most unique, stand-out designs and built off them.

I hope my slavefu gets more screen time.

H&S was what showed her to be a superior choice for protagonist, though.

Reina was a typical grouchy goody two shoes on a quest to get stronger. I don't think that she was the absolute worst choice for protagonist, but she was definitely the most boring. That's one of the biggest criticisms that people have of the original series.
Elina was somewhat one-dimensional in the anime, but you'd have to make a concentrated effort to write a protagonist that way while writing more fleshed out characters around her. H&S Elina was more chaotic neutral. She wasn't a complete cunt who would never warm up to anyone not named Reina or Claudette, but she was a little unpredictable in regards to how honorable she'd be, and they turned her reaction face factor into something mildly genki.

Which protagonist sounds like a better base to build an interesting story around?

I would agree that H&S isn't a must-read or anything, but it was more due to the fact it (along with the other QB manga) felt like it was never meant to run 120+ chapters and have serious progression through set story arcs with a serious conclusion. It certainly wasn't due to its somewhat playful take on Elina, and it was okay for what it was.
