It's VERY slow-paced. Sometimes there will be several sequential episodes before any main story arc progresses.

I think that's necessary to explore characters internally because they are layered and believable people with actual motivations instead of just being anime archetypes. It doesn't advance the story as soon as possible, but by the end you really now all the main characters inside and out which helps you buy into the story itself naturally.

If I wanted to watch something about the French Revolution, I'd watch a documentary about the life of Robespierre (or Louis XVI, if I wanted something told from the perspective of the upper classes), instead of watching a shitty shoujo drama-filled 40 episode anime about crossdressing and yuri (which, if I wanted to watch, I'd rewatch Utena instead).

The anime is a shot-per-shot recreation of the manga. The only thing it does is add some stupid recaps which makes it a bit longer but it's not too bad.

At the risk of sounding like a moron, can someone help me out with Monster? Tell me what I'm missing, especially when compared to 20th Century Boys, which so far I've enjoyed much more.

In 20CB there's always this sense of the reader being completely dumbfounded by what's going on, and there's an insane page-turning quality that makes the experience unique.

In Monster, everything moves relatively slowly, and all the cards are right there on the table to begin with. We know who the serial killer is. We know who his sister is. We know he's manipulating everyone. We know he's cool and smart and that everyone is either terrified of him or worships the ground he walks on. But there's no actual mystery there. Everything is just sitting there plain as day while we wait for Johan to do the next cool thing we're supposed to gawk at. The only mystery to uncover seems to have to do with his mental state or his motivation, and that's nowhere near as interesting as the identity of "Friend", and how he could possibly be related to the main cast or their childhood antics. He's a scary evil misanthrope. He's evil for the sake of proving evil exists. I get it. Am I missing something? Is there any intrigue here, or am I just waiting for him and the main character to face off?

Maybe Monster throws some serious left hooks later on that I haven't reached yet. I'll have to see. I'm basically continuing it for Detective Lunge at this point since he's the best part.
