Can someone explain to me why a semi-circle is such a dominant tactic?

All I see is a formation that either makes it easier for enemy shots to connect with your ships or prevents your own ships in the back from firing.

I guess the goal is to prevent an enemy breakthrough in the center?

It isn't.
For one, formations in general don't really translate well to space warfare, and for another, this particular one was a miscommunication between the author and the anime team. The Semi-circle was supposed to be hollow. That still wouldn't have been an overly effective space formation, but it would have been better than the filled semi-circle by a wide margin.
