We do, the tree is surrounded by plains with forest all around it. There may be demon dogs in the forest but considering how quick the caravans are that shouldn't be an issue as long as he is willing to pay the dude a little more.
And they don't need the army, knowing the cult is coming is more than enough info to prepare a defence plan, specially if he dies and gets a new save point. If he made it fast enough he may even get there before the owner of the mansion leaves.

I don't know if they'd have been enough to defend the mansion on their own, remember they had an army with them and still had to resort to surprise attacks where they knew the location of the enemy's camps beforehand. Plus, the White Whale was probably a contingency plan in case they somehow failed.
But what the hell, Subaru can RbD as much as he wants, he'd probably figure something out.

I cannot believe how flat this show fell after episode 18. Everything up until Episode 18 was great, Rem was great, Betelguese was great, I was hooked, and then they spent five episode on the White Whale, like we were supposed to give a fuck about it why? What even was the Whale? There was this great character driven plot focusing around the Return by Death and Subaru being a scumbag, then I guess the writers ran out of ideas and drew five episode out of a completely out-of-place Moby Dick reference.

It could have ended here and been totally cohesive. Everything after this episode was downhill.
