Keeping up with this manga that I loved so much for over 10 years as it was plagued by numerous agonizing hiatuses, a flawed adaptation that failed to capture the entire essence of the source material and unspeakably shitty threads that actually used to be pleasant was like watching a beautiful, pure and kindhearted young girl grow into an unremarkable, mediocre woman, her character mutated by the harsh realities of the world.

I think most of us would agree that the real world is flawed and mundane and it's our imaginations as human beings that make life more interesting. You're probably partly right because working on the same project for 20 years will take its toll on you, but you really cant be sure about that until you let the current content flesh itself out more. For all we know Togashi's been sitting on ideas for this arc that he's been waiting to get to for over a decade or longer. If you don't like where it's going, fine, but it's clear Togashi is pouring an unprecedented amount of thought and effort into this arc. At a very slow pace and more mental effort in the planning than physical effort in the drawing, but still. It's absurdly ambitious to the point that can't imagine him resolving such a huge number of new storylines, most of which are totally new to the story rather than loose ends that need to be wrapped up. He's also so obviously committed to his ideas that he never compromises to get to 'the good bits' despite the hiatus. You'd think he'd bend to the pressure and just put in more fights or some shit but he persists with thorough, complicated set ups that require time and words to convey. It'll be better payoff in the end no doubt, but people with short attention spans always bitch about it.

Get some perspective. This is a big, complicated arc that necessitates a lot of build up. CA arc was the same. I wasn't there as it was being published but I bet people were losing their minds over all the seemingly pointless new characters, information and plot points he was dedicating time to. In the end he tied everything together beautifully and it had max impact because of it. People complained endlessly about CA arc when it was coming out. I remember at the middle of palace invasion is when more people started to praise the arc as one of the best.

It was fun seeing peoples reaction to 2011 because most people loved it. And I'm guessing one of the reasons is that there isn't any hiatuses in anime so the story is fresh in mind.

I have mixed feelings about Hisoka vs Chrollo. On one hand, it really shows how smart Togashi is.On the other hand, he's smarter than me so it was hard to really enjoy a fight when I couldn't follow it easily. But I'm not sure it's fair to say writing is bad just because the audience can't keep up with it, and even for those who struggled with the strategy there were great physical moves throughout.

If you really don't think Chrollo cheated you're just deluded.

About showing/telling, it's not just nen exposition where it happens. But for example, Hisoka was using cards to slice since his first appearance. We don't need a whole explanation and name for the technique ("shu" IIRC.) Other series do the same thing (imbuing ki into objects) without saying anything.

That particular training was pointless mostly because it didn't really introduce anything new. The fights/results weren't necessarily pointless.
You could make the argument that those characters ended up accomplishing nothing either, but that's not really important.

HxH just reads like a diary more than anything. It's about things that happen to the characters. If the story points out that Kurapika's revenge is hollow, or that Gon is selfish, it doesn't change that fact. There's rarely another side to the story.

What makes something "not shallow"? I don't really feel like HxH is attempting to defend itself on that front. Characters like Wing and Biscuit exist because the plot required them, and that's fine with Togashi. Those characters don't have a stake in anything else going on, and the actual development only happens to a very small group

I dunno, I don't think it's worth the time digging into details for this. The best I can give is impressions. Though, I do feel like One Piece makes an effort to have its characters feel like they would still exist without the plot.

That's not really the reason why I disliked the fight. Although the strategy being convoluted was part of it, it was more that I felt it was unrealistically convoluted, in the context of the story. Sure I get that Hisoka and Chrollo are intelligent, but the text in those chapters read more like something out of the campiest chapters of Death Note. Do even geniuses think that way, or was the Hisoka vs Chrollo fight just a typical case of "I know that he knows that I know"? Do Hisoka and Chrollo really think at a speed so swift that paragraphs of thought go through their heads every half second? Maybe, maybe not. I didn't think so.

Plus I was hoping for Chrollo to use a host of abilities, but we mostly only got his Sun and Moon, which I didn't think was very interesting. Boils down to opinion at the end of the day I guess!

Back at the time Beyond was completely obsessed with going to the DC, however his father forbid him to go there, as a result he began scheming in the shadow to attain his objective. The only thing left to do was to talk to them about the DC and its various resources. They had to ally themselves with a country big enough to deal with all the protocols an individual must follow to go there; and one that didn't respect international laws(which is the case for Kakin due to the Rev)
However since it's politics and we don't want relationships to be too tense, Kakin managed to force the V5 into participating in the voyage as well by subtly using hostages: announcing on TV that DC is full of wealth and resources. At that point, it was either V5 refusing and then HxH would have became One Piece where everyone tried their ways illegally to go to the DC except that it would've been a complete worldwide disaster, or they accept and ally themselves with Kakin to manage the flux of innocents and make them stay on the Fake Continent
