An obvious trend in recent times is webgen animators for example.

Sword Art Online, SnK and Madoka are the first three that come to mind. You can easily point to several blatant imitations of each, and they all renewed interest in their genres.

This chart seems to be more about trends in animation styles than trends in genre though. Things like The Hakkenden or Gosenzosama on there weren't huge hits but amongst animators in Japan they are considered some of the best, most important and influential works of their time on the visual style of anime and it's animation.
