Stop using this meme word when what you really mean is "well-written." And good female characters are more prominent in anime because telling a good story requires good writing. Mind you, plenty of anime don't utilize their female characters very well, but there are plenty that do because of the amount of anime being made. That, and Japanese audiences actually WANT to see stories featuring female characters in prominent roles, even if it's just for the sake of waifuism. Still, a good waifu can still be a good character.
