Localizing things should be like translating them- you try to show the work and all the good in it in a form digestible to the audience. Shit really. Motoko got white washed just because, even though all action was still taking place in Japan (changing her ethnicity would be ok if they'd make th move happen in NY or San Francisco or wherever). The meaning of "ghost" and "shell" was hammerfisted since the very first scene.
They tried to mix the plot of all the movies into one and in result got just some wierd hybrid.
Also - mind you- I watched the Hollywood movie first before seeing the anime version. And only the outcry of fans convinced me to watch the originals. The eng version is pretty shallow on it's own.
