I first watched Azumanga Daioh when I was 19 years old, and Osaka and Tomo were my favorite characters. I recently re-watched it at 29 years old, and now Sakaki and the teachers are my favorite characters.

DVDs are natively 480i, anamorphic (your video player corrects the aspect ratio on playback). This is why you see some people making 720x480 (3:2 aspect ratio) screenshots. Any "DVD" release claiming to have a higher resolution than 720x480 is an upscale.
"720p" started becoming a thing around 2006 when someone managed to hack a DTV receiver to let him save the transport stream. Before 2006 you were limited to DVD-rips or crappy analog TV recordings.
Your best bet for old shows is looking for a softsubbed DVD-rip encoded this decade.

The reason for all this is that until 2005-2008 or so all shows were made with SDTV and DVD releases in mind. Digital productions meant there's no photographic film to simply rescan. And instead of obsessively saving high resolution work files in all stages of production, the animation studios routinely deleted what they didn't need. Why do something you're not paid for?

I am just now watching this series for the 1st time. Often saw gif/images with the characters/art style, but didn't know to which series it belonged. Finally figured out the name.
I have to say I am enjoying it A LOT! Going in blind to what it was about has made it all the better. I have actually had genuine laughs from this anime as opposed to slight exhales. Japanese comedy must have changed in 13 years, or the series just nails the delivery.

Is Chio-chan the closest the world will ever get to an animated Yotsuba type girl? She is adorable.
Osaka is just the right amount of dumb, again, delivered properly.

They did a wonderful job on the swimsuits for the girls. For some reason it just looks more pleasant than some all out ecchi series.

4chan went to shit when Obama got elected. I don't think the election itself is directly responsible, but it all went to hell around 2008.

I'd say Lucky Star got pretty close. Hidamari Sketch has most things right but is ultimately its own thing. The Azumanga Daioh of our time would probably be Osomatsu-san. Kemono Friends shows potential, but we've just snapped the tip of off the iceberg.
Azumanga boils down to easily accessible characters and comedy above everything else. Complicated characters and stories serve purposes different from Azumanga's.
Personally I would say Seitokai Yakuindomo.
