>character that struggles in fights, wins some and loses some
or
>character that makes their enemies look like shit 99% of the time
Just using the this image as an example, because these two characters instantly come to mind. So don't answer the question just based off of these two characters.

It's hard to say, it all depends on execution.
Seeing a guy utterly destroy his opposition is fun as long as you make it look cool and distinct when he does it, otherwise it gets stale. On the other hand, winning and losing fights can make things feel uncertain, which can make for some surprises or doubts.

I can't think of a good character that falls into the second category. Not even Saitama
>>159055137
A character that struggles in fights, wins some and loses some. For both the protagonist and antagonists.
What about a character that loses 100% of the time?

Kenshiro maybe?
He's not edgy like Alucard, and he's not a meme like Saitama.
>>159055137
The former. Characters like Alucard only lead to series getting increasingly wacky with power levels to the point where everyone can destroy a city by blinking.
B.
The struggler is pointless to watch, because you know he will win in the end. If he doesn't win, it will be a huge shock/twist, which you will know about and as such remove the fact it's twist.
B is just a mary sue and is almost never done right.

Guts.
By the end of Hellsing I was rooting for the Nazis because of how annoyingly overpowered was Alucard.
>>159055137
That's unfair OP because I love both characters on that image.

Glorious Jotaro Kujo.
I like both types.
character that struggles in fights, wins some and loses some, but knows to move forward from his past mistakes and look to a brighter Future
A, not even a contest.
Characters like Alucrap are piece of shits and only pandering to 12 years olds.

>Rooting for LITERAL nazis cause 'muh underdogs'
>>159055137
Problem with Alucard in this particular cause adn reason why it works is because he's less of a character and more like elemental force of nature that just wrecks everything in its way. As a character, aside from his secret admiration for humanity, he's practically non-existent and doesn't drive the story in any way outside of being Hellsing's WMD.

The best heroes are always the ones which suffer the most, either physically, mentally or emotionally. Even someone like Saitama abides by this rule since his overwhelming strength is his own curse.
Invincible heroes that make their enemies look pathetic only work in video games (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, etc).

Deal with it, merchant.

Ken and Jotaro all at least give the illusion of danger that makes their fights entertaining unlike Alucard's boring curbstomps. Hell Ken and Jotaro actualy were in danger in their later battles.
