SnK is already popular as fuck. The anime is basically a glorified advertisement as this point. As long as figure sales, costume sales, poster sales, etc. goes up, they will keep making another season.
The same goes for Jump anime like Boku no Hero, Dragon Ball, Shokugeki no Soma, etc. The sales are always shit but other merch sells a fuck ton.

Kyoani makes anime for fun, not to make money. They did it because they wanted to do it. The same for Tamako Love Story. They have a huge debt, so they may not be able to keep doing it for much longer, but they've kept it going for a long time now, so I don't know.

About the numbers, I believe they could be a bit more accurate.
The Manabi line is at 2899 sales, which is the point where an anime breaks even. Selling less than this once or twice may not kill a studio, but it can absolutely be regarded as a huge flop.
If an anime sells less than the Manabi line, there is no point even hoping for a sequel, but if it sells above, there is some hope. The rule of thumb is that if you break the Manabi line, there may be a sequel. Otherwise not.
Is it a success at 10000? Usually. But I think it's better to draw the line at 6000. It may not exactly be a success, but it's not a flop either. You can usually be happy with that.

And yes, it's a well known fact that Kyoani has way higher numbers. I think it may be quite accurate if we double that. That would make 6000 the break even point, but it really is still a flop. That could explain how Hibike could get a sequel. I don't want to call 12000 a success, but it's okay I guess. I think for a Kyoani anime to be considered a success, it really needs to sell 18000. But 12000 is probably enough to make a small profit, while still being disappointing.
