As much as some of you guys love your off the wall pairings, I sincerely doubt the romance aspect of this series is where Kamachi will spend his creativity. The plot is full enough and some off the wall romantic development isn't required for this genre. The logical truth is we are going to get a) the pairings that are obvious or b) choice a) except a little more ambiguous (i.e. Touma out shopping with Index and Mikoto, an older Last Order resting her head on Accelerator's shoulder as they ride a train to the same mall Touma is at, all of this without explicitly stating romantic pairings)

He's very much different in a way I can't even describe and I've always felt like he didn't belong in the city when I first watched the series. I personally liked his development from having an insecure fake hero complex, to self sacrificing, to finally just doing whatever the hell he wants. The amnesia thing was still kind of a dick move though. We only got a glimpse of how he was pre-amnesia and have no idea what he was like as a kid before he came to AC. A kid who is treated like a literal demon is definitely not going to be a happy go lucky little guy.

Sadly, I wouldn't say that this arc is at par with the other story arcs of Railgun. For starters, we have been heavily sidetracked from the original storyline which is about the Indian Poker cards. As we headed down the sub-arc on Kuriba, we immediately lose the POV of the users of the Indian Poker cards, the entire subplot of the Dream Ranker hierarchy, and the involvement of Judgment in investigating the technology involved in making the cards.

All we got in the end were several plot threads that were overlooked in favor of closing the story arc with Kuriba Ryouko's own story, which isn't that related to the Indian Poker cards at all.

I haven't read the LN but from the anime series I can tell you that Kamijou are Haruue are the only two self insert characters in this series that I know about. Why Kamachi chose to give both of them that role is beyond me but that's just how it is and anybody who knows anything about writing can see it as clear as day. It's not even a question.

Anon when you write a story you have a major choice dealing with the main character.

#1 make them with very mellow personality traits that won't make them stick out too much so that they can be relatable to the largest amount of people possible and put them in situations that are desirable such a hero of justice, surrounded by tons of girls/boys or maybe they suffer for everybody's happiness and they always try to feel justified in what they do and take the high ground just like the audience because we all naturally cheer for this type of person. These types will usually start from a very modest reasonable position and work their way up. (Aka self insert)

#2 give them a strong personality and beliefs and maybe they'll do things against the rules to get their way or have major quarks etc but over time you hope that the audience will grow to love them anyways. These types of characters will can start with very high or very low status in their world because they're their own person.

Madoka is a point of view and an audience surrogate character as it is her discovery of the world that allows the audience to learn about it.

Sayaka is a lesson on the cruelty about the world of magical girls.

An audience may want to self insert as the idea of a magical girl is supposed to be fun but the story pretty much first hammers home the idea that magical girls are not fun. Madoka recreates the world to reflect the idea that magical girls can be what she imagined and well rebellion changes that direction again.
