Wait, do japs actually take their shoes off when they go in their house? Why? Do they want to get their feet dirty??

House floors are generally clean as long as you vacuum and clean regularly and don't walk all over the place with your filthy shoes.

Christ, it blows my mind that not only do people apparently wear their shoes around in the house, but they also believe that everyone else does and that it's the right thing to do.

Minnesota here. Pretty much everyone I've ever met takes off their shoes and expects others to take off their shoes. Sometimes people invite others to wear their shoes in if they're just there for a short period of time, like to discuss something with a contractor for example. When entering someone else's house, I'd consider it polite to ask permission, as it could be seen as rude to make yourself at home right away if you don't know them well. And at that point I would never walk past the entryway with shoes still on unless they specifically said it was okay.

I don't know where the idea that Americans wear their shoes around inside homes comes from, but I don't like it.
>>
>>159004487
I have a mudroom as well. I guess non-Americans don't know what that is, but basically it's a small room right at the entrance where guests can bang the mud and animal feces off their shoes before continuing into the house. It's a really clever idea in my opinion, and the carpet can be replaced every 6 months or whatever.

>>
Honestly I think whether or not you remove your shoes really depends on that context and the house itself.
I always take off my shoes when I get home, because we have smaller rooms and all of our floors are carpeted.

I've been invited to houses with really big rooms with hardwood floors and taking off my shoes didn't really feel right.
It's okay to keep your shoes on in bigger houses where your feet are far away from anything important and messes are easy to clean up.

I can see why people generally take their shoes off in Japan because most of their houses are on the smaller side and sitting on the floor is more common where your feet are close to your face.
>>
I'm pretty sure most Americans will take their shoes off when they get home but not at the front door. Most of the people I know will take them off in their room or closet and either go barefoot or wear socks/slippers afterwards. This is especially true if you live alone. Going barefoot with guests isn't common.

Some rooms in my house are carpet, some are hardwood. I take off my shoes when entering a carpet room and put them back on for the wood. I've been to numerous other people's houses and most of them don't even go that far, and just tread all over their own carpet without taking a second to remove their shoes, which, personally, I find to be irresponsible, but to each his own I guess. Whenever I enter another person's home, I simply do with my shoes whatever they happen to be doing, since it's their house, their rules. Most people would get really weirded out if they invited you in and you took off your shoes despite the fact that they themselves still have their shoes on, and the opposite is just plain rude. I live in California btw.

Where is the logic here? What third world country are you in where you wear shoes but don't wear socks? They take off their shoes when they come INSIDE, the shoes that you put on when you go OUTSIDE, and just wear socks around the house.

Ignoring that, why is it so unrealistic that people would be barefoot in their own house? Seriously where are you from? I'm American and it's just common fucking sense to not trample your dog shit covered boots inside the house.

Aside from making your floor dirty, shoes are...
>often loud on floors and highly unpleasant to listen to when compared to the potentially silent bare or socked footstep
>much less comfortable than bare feet and make your feet hot and stinky
>much more difficult to relax in, because of the reduced comfort and the fact that shoes indicate psychologically that you're out and about
USA here, I never wear shoes in the house unless I'm just very quickly running back in to get something and I'm wearing something like winter boots that aren't easily slipped on and off. I actually wish at times that shoelessness were standard practice for public buildings as well, like in mosques, and we just wore socks inside (for some barrier against the bare floor and strangers' foot sweat, but far amplified comfort and reduced dirtiness). But then there's the issue of where to put shoes if it's a large building with hundreds of people (like a single-building school or office), and the fact that some floors are disgusting regardless of footwear like when people pee on bathroom floors. If I'm going to track around pee residue I'd rather do it fully shoed, but the comfort and reduced noise of wearing socks indoors publicly would be really quite nice. Imagine this: floors never having that filthy salty residue in the winter.

From what I can tell, the only actual cultural difference is that some Americans wear their shoes inside until they get to their room. It depends on if there's a good place to take them off once you come in the door.

Japanese houses are pretty much always built with a little step next to the door to put your shoes before you come in so their shoes never go beyond that point.

I wish frameless traditional JP furniture were more common/accepted in the US. Sleeping on the floor, sitting on the floor, etc. There really in no point at all to having a frame on your bed, and it'd be much cheaper and save wood. Only benefits to high beds and high tables I can think of is easily setting things on them from a standing position. But doing things low seems so comfy.

>Your floor is dirty because you wear your shoes inside you fucking mongoloid

The floor was made to get dirty you inbred yuropoor. Maybe because you're too poor to afford a vaccuum and the $10 worht of electricity to turn it on once a month you feel the need to belittle rich americans like me because I prefer to be comfy, warm, and clean in my home. You probably live in a dirt hovel and own a single pair of shoes which were passed down for generations, because you're so poor you can't afford anything else. Then your family and all other yuropoor families made up a gay little story about how "everyone takes their shoes off indoors" because they don't want you to wear out the shoes because you'll never be able to afford another pair.

And don't deny it, my friend went to europe and told me this is literally how almost every european lives, in a shitty little communist house with dirt floors and no running water. He said the toilets only had like half a gallon of water in them and could only flush turds if they were small and fragile, like the ones europeans produce on their diet of grass and bog water. He also said a lot of kids were missing one or both feet because in the winter it gets so cold and they can't afford heat, and because they don't wear their shoes they get frostbite.

SO fuck off you idiot yuropoors, just because you can't afford the luxuries americans take for granted doesn't make you in the right.

Massachusetts here. I take off my shoes when I get inside my house, but that's for comfort more than anything. When I go to other people's house, or they come to mine, the shoes usually stay on, and if I do take off my shoes at someone else's house, I ask them if I'm allowed first. Spent a year in California, and I think it's the case their too, but I haven't been to many other people's houses there, so I can't say for sure.

It also elevates you away from the heavier-than-air gases that build up in your house so you are exposed to a lower concentration of them. There's other methods you can utilize to reduce their buildup, like being fortunate enough to have a sliding door or some other way of letting the gasses roll outside, or having houseplants.

But a lot of people don't do gardening or only buy generic houseplants instead of peace lillies, snake plants, and variegated pothos that cleans that crap out of the air.

But the result is more comfy. And you spend like 1/3 of your life on a bed.

No problem to anyone who can afford to rent a room. Everyone but the desperately poor has a bed.

But yes, just a blanket or sleeping somewhere on the ground without anything is cheaper.

If an American steps in dog poop and then wears the shoes in the house, there will be poop all over the house. Then when the people in the house leave, they will track poop everywhere they go. Poop will be everywhere in every building and every street

This is a little like asking "Do Americans really wear pants inside?" sure we do, but not all the time. And most of us don't go to any special trouble to avoid wearing pants inside. Generally in someone else's home you'd wear them unless they preferred otherwise to avoid appearing to casual.

I said droplets, nigger. DROPLETS. The occasional piss droplet when you're in a hurry to shake and wash your hands. The small drops from your hands when you reach from the sink to the towel. The microscopic droplets splashed into the air every time you flush the toilet and turn on the sink. Even assuming you're careful and vigilant enough to never manage to let a drop of fluid fall from you to the floor, every single thing you, and everyone else does in the bathroom still leaves some residue and that all settles into the carpet and it holds odors.

The problem isn't the carpet itself, but the inability to practically keep it clean over long periods of time without either replacing it, or getting a deep cleaning.

I never understood why people would wear shoes inside their own houses. If you keep your floors clean why would your feet get dirty. Wearing shoes indoors just means if you want to keep a clean floor you have to work constantly to remove all the dirt.

>>159007280
I have a robot vacuum cleaner + shopvac + buildin vac + steamer + tons of lysol. If you force people to take off their shoes it means you can spend a lot less time cleaning less wear and tear on robot replacement parts, brushes inside vacuum, less consumable usage. The amount of dirt that builds up on the landing where people take their shoes off requires much more effort to get clean than every other area which you can just let the robot deal with. Even if your rolling in money it doesn't hurt to be efficient with cleaning to minimise costs.

I used to live in Hawaii, which has adopted a lot of Asian culture including the shoe thing. So I do both. Sometimes I wear shoes inside but mostly I don't.

Also, it's not like I'm walking on anything dirtier than sidewalk, so it doesn't really bother me when shoes are worn inside. If it's been raining or I've actually walked around on dirt, then I'll definitely take them off.

It's mostly a cost issue. For some reason, nobody wants to invest in a nice futon. When I was an older teenager, I lived on my own in a fairly small apartment. I've had it restuffed and it's still very usable.

I'm really curious where in America this is the norm and where it isn't
Where I'm from it's bizarre and kinda rude not to but seems like there's good portions of the US where it's different
I also really wonder where these people keep their shoes. Do they leave them beside their bed and then put them on as soon as they get up? Or do they leave them in the entryway and put them on when they go out but just never take them off when they come back?
>>
>>159015711
I'm originally from New England. Everyone I knew had a carpet or little entry way to take your shoes off in when you enter a house.
>>
>>159003927
It depends on the kind of flooring and the personality of the homeowner. In southern California it's generally seen as obsessive and excessive to ask someone a prerequisite for entering their house. Plus taking off one's shoes would reveal the state of one's feet and socks, with odor and all that.

Easier and more gracious to just clean the floors later. Otherwise you are basically calling out your guests add uncleanly fucks.
>>
>>159015711
I leave them by my bed and wear them when I leave, but I expect people to keep their shoes on if they've come to have dinner or something.
I don't get the obsession with carpet though, I like wood.

Have you ever been to a ritzy dinner party at some rich dude's house? Everybody wears their shoes and walks without concern over expensive rugs and carpets. Probably because they don't give a shit, not like they'll be cleaning those floors.

Wearing shoes in your house is a mark of decadent character just as much as it is of barbarism.

In the midwest, or at least in my area, its odd to wear shoes inside, but where you take them off isn't really standardized per se. (some in room/kitchen/front door etc.) When visiting someone's house it's expected for you to take off your shoes, but leave your socks on. Taking off the socks is reserved for the home or with someone's house you're really close to.

How hard it is to take off your shoes and walk with slippers/socks/barefoot at home?
Or you're from a rich household with maids and cleaner who walk behind you to collect the shit you drop on the ground?
Do you also throw meal tissues and chicken wing bones on the ground and sweep over the ground with the sweeper after meal?
Do you not flush your used toilet papers and instead throw them in the garbage can you find in the kitchen?

There are so many cultural differences in here, you can't just argue like that.

I can't believe all the stupid Americans in this thread denying the truth. Your anecdotal evidence means nothing. The fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of Americans wear shoes indoors. If you went to a friend's house and began to remove your shoes, they would either laugh at you, or stare in horror like you were stripping naked. I don't like it, but that's the way it is here.

>>159015835
If your guests have feet dirty enough to give off an odor, you should be calling them uncleanly fucks.

It's as simple as having a shower every day and not wearing the same shoes every day, if your guests can't manage basic hygiene you should ridicule them and consider whether you want them in your home at all.

The first arc was executed flawlessly. When he reappears is also excellent at the beginning - however, as the story progresses i feel that the story gets dragged down in endless loops of combat that serves no purpose - there is a terrible pattern of five or six groups fighting at the same time and yet new characters show up, leading to further confusion. Also, it is clear that the tower itself is losing mystery - in the end, all that remains are game levels. I found myself scrolling more and more to skip instead to read the further i went. At this point only Urek Mazino is redeemable but he too is just a cog in the machine.

Also, the pacing will become a problem - nobody knows further from the 134th floor, yet it takes them years to pass two or three floors - so how does everyone else has immortality if you woul need at least 200 years to clear it the first time? Well, that is a minor issue.

The people as well serve no purpose - we dont see what ordinary life is like - not even background noise, the tower is a game center no matter how fancy you slice it. And now it is becoming just your average battle manga with endless prolonged battles.

In north america is mostly a West coast/East coast divergence.

On the West coast nearly everyone takes their shoes off when entering a house. On the East coast nearly everyone leaves their shoes on. In my experience this is true in both America and Canada.

This is not universally true, but it's extremely prevalent. I don't know what caused this.

What's wrong with people nowadays, there is nothing wrong with walking around barefoot in your house. It is far healthier to walk around barefoot than to keep your feet trapped in shoes all day and let them sweat. Feet need to be aired occasionally and besides how dirty is your house that walking in it would make your feet dirty? There are also many benefits to walking around barefoot, for one thing it increases blood circulation to the feet and legs which helps keep then healthy and free from pain.
