What was it about early digital that made the shows stuck in

They are mastered at very low resolutionds and so they look like shit when upscaled.

Also, publishers being cheap/lazy fucks and using crappy vectoring algorithms for upscaling rather than something custom made for anime like waifu2x doesnt help either

But why? Did they not have the technology yet to store the masters in good quality for digital? For cel even the later cel we have amazing BD masters.

Early digital was rendered at 480p or even 360p, so it looks like ass when upscaled to 1080p.

For old cel show they still have the films (which have a surprisingly good resolution) and they scan frame by frame
