The only thing I'd give the manga over the anime is that it goes up until Marie'x execution, and that the dresses in the manga are much prettier.

Other than that, the anime is pretty solid. TThe characterization is a lot more smother, and I like the attempts at giving it a dramatic flair, like making Robespierre into a fucking supervillian, and more emphasis on Andre's "problem"

Alain is a much better character in the anime. There, you get the idea that they're a rough and rumble group of civilians at the eve of the French Revolution, doing what they have to to survive.
In the manga, Alain acts like a fucking child and is ready to try and kill Oscar at any whisper of something going wrong.. I also like Jeanne being more of a tragic character in the anime rather than a selfish witch

I would have liked them having the climax be Antonetta's execution and Oscar living to see the terror. She always defended Antonetta and in a way was complicit in enabling her decadence. While she didn't partake of the spoils, she did take full advantage of having the Queen's favor to get of the hook more than a few times. The way she turned her back on the Queen in their final scene together felt shitty, there should have been more drama in that. If she had then lived to see Antoinette's execution, would she have done what she does for Andre and step up and be killed alongside her or stand by and watch as waves of emotion flood her. I understand that she had to die before the terror to preserve her innocence but that isn't what I wanted. As a point in history, the terror deserves to be looked at with both eyes open, it's an opportunity to unravel the characters and show how easy everything can go to hell.
Even though it would involve a lot of ass pulls to get there, Oscar as a grenadier in Napoleon's army would have kicked ass.

That was an enormous turning point and it should have been bigger. I would have liked to see Oscar reflecting back on her relationship with the Queen with more regret. With Oscar, riyoko ikeda left such an important legagy of well rounded, strong and independent female role models. BeruBara was vital because it helped popularize the industry of manga aimed at women. Its influence is so far reaching, that you could probably trace the lineage of Mahou shoujou anime back to Berubara.

Since then, manga/anime has seen a huge share of great female characters like Noriko from Gunbuster in the 80s, Utena in the 90s, Kino in the 2000s and many others.

I care about media aimed towards young girls, and I honestly think that anime has the best offerings if you pick the right works. I mean, there's a tone of trashy shit but the high-watermark shoujo manga can be incredible, and that's all thanks (in large part) to Riyoko Ikeda.

Lupin the Third series comes pretty close to that art style in anime. There was even a Lupin III/The Rose of Versailles crossover episode, where Oscar and Lupin interacted, and even fought each other. It's at around the 100 episode mark of the Second "Red Jacket" Series of Lupin. It was a good episode, but kind of weird to have Oscar time-traveling to then-modern-day France. Osamu Dezaki IMO at least could direct, something most anime director's now can't. Osamu Dezaki also directed Ashita no Joe. Also Glass Mask (2005) is a good TV series, as most of the Hollywood production people, need to go back to theater, to re-learn their craft.
