What do you think of this late '70s, early '80s anime? Has anyone seen it, or also read the 1970s manga? The Rose of Versailles is critically well acclaimed, and has even been made into a 1979 live-action film, parts of it are on Youtube too.

Of course she was. Oscar was given a male name by her father in order to act as a son so that she could legally join the military, since he only had other daughters among his children. Interestingly, she is even allowed after everyone just sees her as a woman. Effectively, she was doing the Joan of Arc thing by French Revolutionary times. She also had affections for the main man in the series, André.
>>
Impatiently waiting for the English manga.

There was an English translation used during the making of the 1979 live-action movie, but it ended up getting lost soon thereafter. It's too bad that no new translation has surfaced since then.

Honestly, Oscar's death in the manga struck me as being a bit too over the top with the way that Andre's ghost comes to visit her and everything.

I preferred her anime death, where she mistakes a bird for Andre and doesn't give a massive monologue, a lot more.

>>158933303

>>158942505
I prefer the anime's take on the deaths honestly. André dying by a stray bullet rather than jumping in front of Oscar makes it seem like the world is truly against Oscar. And having Rosalie be present for both just kind of adds to her character in my opinion

The only thing I'd give the manga over the anime is that it goes up until Marie'x execution, and that the dresses in the manga are much prettier.

Other than that, the anime is pretty solid. TThe characterization is a lot more smother, and I like the attempts at giving it a dramatic flair, like making Robespierre into a fucking supervillian, and more emphasis on Andre's "problem"

Alain is a much better character in the anime. There, you get the idea that they're a rough and rumble group of civilians at the eve of the French Revolution, doing what they have to to survive.
In the manga, Alain acts like a fucking child and is ready to try and kill Oscar at any whisper of something going wrong.. I also like Jeanne being more of a tragic character in the anime rather than a selfish witch
>>158936841
OVER THE FUCKING LINE, CARLOS
>>
>>158943358
I think the manga as a whole looks prettier, the dresses, the faces, the hair, the shoujo sparkles
I just like Ikeda's art style
Also the manga has that scene where Jeanne calls Oscar a lesbian and she gets so mad she tried to cut her down in court until André stopped her

GROOVY
>>
I would have liked them having the climax be Antonetta's execution and Oscar living to see the terror. She always defended Antonetta and in a way was complicit in enabling her decadence. While she didn't partake of the spoils, she did take full advantage of having the Queen's favor to get of the hook more than a few times. The way she turned her back on the Queen in their final scene together felt shitty, there should have been more drama in that. If she had then lived to see Antoinette's execution, would she have done what she does for Andre and step up and be killed alongside her or stand by and watch as waves of emotion flood her. I understand that she had to die before the terror to preserve her innocence but that isn't what I wanted. As a point in history, the terror deserves to be looked at with both eyes open, it's an opportunity to unravel the characters and show how easy everything can go to hell.
Even though it would involve a lot of ass pulls to get there, Oscar as a grenadier in Napoleon's army would have kicked ass.

I feel it's a lot more tragic for Oscar to die without ever knowing the consequences of her actions. The tragedy was that, in the end, Oscar was swapping one corrupt establishment for another without even realising it. Whether or not she learns of this is irrelevant.

>Oscar working for Napoleon
Assuming she didn't die 6 months after the Bastille from her illness, she'd probably want to retire so she could live as a woman.

Speaking of that, I wonder what kind of mother Oscar would make?

That was an enormous turning point and it should have been bigger. I would have liked to see Oscar reflecting back on her relationship with the Queen with more regret. With Oscar, riyoko ikeda left such an important legagy of well rounded, strong and independent female role models. BeruBara was vital because it helped popularize the industry of manga aimed at women. Its influence is so far reaching, that you could probably trace the lineage of Mahou shoujou anime back to Berubara.

Since then, manga/anime has seen a huge share of great female characters like Noriko from Gunbuster in the 80s, Utena in the 90s, Kino in the 2000s and many others.

I care about media aimed towards young girls, and I honestly think that anime has the best offerings if you pick the right works. I mean, there's a tone of trashy shit but the high-watermark shoujo manga can be incredible, and that's all thanks (in large part) to Riyoko Ikeda.

I really didn't like it. There were a few moments I thought were very well done of course, but overall it was just a melodrama for teenage girls on par with daytime soap operas. The music was almost all horrible as well. Very generic throughout the series.

I'm curious about why you say the music was horrible. What was it about the music? I think it was great.

>>158969414
Lupin the Third series comes pretty close to that art style in anime. There was even a Lupin III/The Rose of Versailles crossover episode, where Oscar and Lupin interacted, and even fought each other. It's at around the 100 episode mark of the Second "Red Jacket" Series of Lupin. It was a good episode, but kind of weird to have Oscar time-traveling to then-modern-day France. The Lupin series has plenty of quirky moments, though!
>>
O lady, lady lady Oscar, tutti fanno festa, quando passi tu
>>
>>158971439
I enjoy the first intro and some of the other themes standout, but overall the score feels very phoned in. The music itself is melodramatic in the way that it overemphasizes whatever emotion it is accompanying in the show. To me that comes out as very generic and pulls me away from the scene rather than strengthening the emotional power of said scene.
>>
>>158971617
>Ikeda saw that self insert's Marie Sue gallery
Holy shit I remember her
The second hand embarrassment is unbearable
>>

Thank you for your reasons! I enjoy most or all of the soundtrack, but I can understand now, why some it it was overbearing. I especially like BGM 14 that you linked. I enjoy both the first and the second halves, first being the calming violin, and the second a melancholic harpsichord. I really liked when the series went for actual classical or classical sounding music in the scenes, probably more than the somewhat 1970s influenced score used largely throughout.

Actually, I thought it was BGM 14 at first, but no, it is BGM 4 (IV). I linked that video in my earlier post below, included as part of a couple of favorites of mine from RoV's soundtrack.

Why did they translate it as "Lady Oscar" in German and Italian? "Lady" isn't French or Japanese, nor German nor Italian. What gives?

Yeah it was fairly common back then.
Most earlier OPs we got in south america wereadapted from french or spanish OPs (wich usually came from the french ones too), until some years later dubs started making their own version from the original japanese OPs

Since thread is semi-Osamu Dezaki related, shame the snow queen anime is rarely mentioned. Amazing series, the japanese extras of the snow queen dvd's (japanese) are amazing! Also looking forward to Rose of Versallies manga, along with the RWBY manga, and minor interest in Devil Man manga also.
>>

First of all its German word we stole from the English in 18th century. (it means the same, but does also count as regular German word)

It sounds "better"/ more mysterious than "Dame/Frau Oscar" and third as a nobility title it show that Oscar is actually not a peasant//allowed near Marie/Andrew.
>>
Osamu Dezaki IMO at least could direct, something most anime director's now can't. Osamu Dezaki also directed Ashita no Joe. Also Glass Mask (2005) is a good TV series, as most of the Hollywood production people, need to go back to theater, to re-learn their craft.

It's interesting to see that the Arabians are the only ones who kept the original music.

Also, I hope you've all read Stefan Zweig's Marie-Antoinette biography. It seems like Ikeda used that book as a reference.

Alain was quite a compelling character. He was likable, but appeared distrustworthy, at first. Then we really get to know him more before the end.
>>
>>158980272
I always liked Alain because he was kind of cocky but after his fight with Oscar he knew his place, and then the whole thing with Dianne was sad
I also know my friend got into RoV only because she wants to fuck Alain and Bernard
So you know, different strokes for different folks
>>
>>158944861
Thank you! This appears to have most of the soundtrack, including many of the various music motifs that can be heard throughout the series. Without a doubt, one of the very best anime soundtracks I have listened to.

>>
>>158981078

>>
>>158980780
That's pretty typical fan stuff, I suppose. I see it across so many different series, I'm not surprised RoV fans may think the same. It's probably quite a fairly normal reaction, to favorite/appealing characters.
>>
>>158981483
Fairly sure Japanese women all have a collective thirst for Oscar too, if all her popularity doesn't show it

Wasn't there a J-Drama about a women who idolised RoV and wanted to be like Oscar or something,? I remember hearing about it but I cant find it anywhere to watch
>>
>>158932385
Was really good but I may be biased since I'm french, thought it ended a little too fast.
>>
Has anyone got any of the RoV merchandise?

Wrong. The peasantry of France bred itself over carrying capacity. No amount of monetary aid could have solved that.

History class has been too long ago for me even though it's my country's history but if Marie Antoinette wouldn't have been sent to France would she have been the ruler of Austria after Maria Theresia?
>>
>>158986481
Yeah that's also true. France did kind of fuck itself there. I just know Marie's spending and gambling led to some less than savoury things happening.
Honestly I can't remember a lot of French history from the top of my head so you're probably more informed than I am in that regard
