The anime came out at a time when Naruto was getting pretty stale. So I think a lot of casuals latched onto it because it had characters that seemed deeper and more mysterious than the ones in Naruto.

I tried reading the original VN about a month ago but the prologue was so completely front-loaded with poorly handled exposition and bullshit that I dropped it before the plot really got going.
Is it worth another look?

I feel that Fate sorta removes from the great works he made before but then by the same token I'm biased because I like Aoko and Touko.

If I had to speak positively of it, I'd say that the concept of the Holy Grail War was honestly such a universally liked concept that would allow a vast number of people to throw themselves into the series has been nothing but good business for Nasu and Type Moon.
