Eren's loyalty to his friends and family over both the absolutely optimal choice for his people's success was already established both before (his wreckless attempt at revenge early in the Shinganshina battle, or wanting to attack Annie in the woods before being given orders, then regreting following those orders) and after (not telling Historia or anyone else about how he can use the coordinate, which would result in her sacrificing herself). If you consider this a character flaw, well that's perfectly justified, but nobody is perfect.

It's not that he should have chose anything. He should have let his superior officer choose for him, because in those sorts of situations that's exactly what you do. It functions both to absolve you of the guilt of your actions and make sure that decisions follow the chain of command. Armin made his sacrifice and Eren was ready to accept it. He could have made mourning time later, but Isayama just had to bring back Armin to life. It's a damn shame, because Armin's death was pretty fucking good and an Eren and Erwin cooperation would have been a little interesting, but at the same time I recognize Isayama has plans for Armin that necessitated bringing him back through a very convoluted situation. It's not that it's a bad character trait, but rather its execution. Isayama wrote the serumbowl in a manner that facilitated him also having to break the chain of command when it's been established early on that he defers to Levi and follows orders without problems. Not only that, it wouldn't be so much of an issue for me if it wasn't with Armin of all people. People were irked by the Arminwank from the very start of RtS. That it ended up being the near climax of the arc only made it worse. If Armin felt even half as justified as he should be for the role that he plays, it might be more acceptable, but at the moment there's pretty much nothing going for him that would make the serumbowl easier to stomach.

Reminder the true best outcome would have been both Erwin and Armin dying.

Armin's dream was important for both of them. Eren accepted Armin's death but when he started to breathe again, Eren couldn't just left him there.
