You can probably look back to The World God Only Knows for the source of this, since it's the first instance I can think of where the normal girl wins over the outlandish cast.

I think the trend is just a result of audience fatigue. When you see the tsundere win a thousand times, you become much more interested in the other possibilities. Authors react to this and strongly toned down tsundere elements outside of their proper place in battle-harems, where they still reign quite supreme. I think it's much healthier the way things are now and creates much more interesting stories.

I think Saekano is a huge mess for many reasons, but the choice of main girl is not really an issue. It feels like all of the petty drama without the proper emotional payoff. Saekano gives all of what is worst in these stories without giving what is best.

You can see on so many kinds of media how they include this demographics, NTR with heavy drama perfectly designed for Koreans, or esports-games fantasies for China, like isekai series. As you can see they also have way different taste for woman anatomy, age and mentality. Expect even more with this paid streaming services having the money to produce.
