What's with this fear /a/ has of something being "edgy" now? It's almost always just something sad/bad happening or a character who is cynical. That's not edgy. Edgy was specifically comically bad series that tried to be dark and mature and failed miserably, not any dark or less than nice theme present in a story.

I'm not even calling any series edgy, I'm talking about characters. A person can be edgy, this has been part of the definition basically forever.

I agree, though. For example, Shinjo was cynical throughout. I liked him for it. At the beginning, though, I remember it came off as a sort of tryhard "cool" characterization, but either that improved quickly or it just worked better once we got into the thick of things and his attitude was more clearly justified, I don't know.
