Back in 2004, Saber topped both nip and western popularity charts, got the most fanart on TM's website, and sold the most merchandise.

When Saber debut genderswapped historical figured wasn't so overused a concept as it is now. And Saber's background was largely vague so readers could interpret her personal struggle between personal feelings and duty any way they wanted to.

Of all the FSN heroes, she was the most believable as a complex historical figure. Medea was simply a vengeful victim. Gilgamesh was arrogant and entitled. Kojiro wanted a good fight, Cu wanted a good master. Emiya was naiive and Heracles was nonexistant.

These days, Saber is pretty vanilla and boring because the franchise has evolved and metafiction has evolved. I think the worst thing that could have happened was TM-ing her history.

I don't know, almost every exploration of Saber's history as King Arthur has been pretty great, among the best content in the larger franchise IMO. Everyone loved Lancelot in Zero, Gawain really stood out in Extra, Mordred was all anyone wanted to talk about when Apocrypha was coming (and likely will be again when the anime debuts). Then came Garden Of Avalon, which fully delved into the Nasu version of a bunch of Arthurian legends and fleshing out of a bunch more characters we hadn't seen yet, and IMO it was great.

You may have a point about at the time of her popularity peak it would have been a mistake to flesh her out too much, but I think doing it later as the franchise grew is why Saber has had as much staying power as she has. You say in retrospect she's kind of vanilla and boring compared to some of the Fate things that have come after her, but I can't agree because every new bit of the Nasu Matter Of Brittan we've gotten has made her more interesting to me as a figure in the setting.

For one thing, the VN is written from Shirou's first person perspective rather than the 3rd Person view we have as viewers of an anime. Being inside Shirou's head, hearing his inner monologue, understanding his weird broken self from within, it all adds a very different dimension to the story. There's also a shit ton of details that obviously can't make the transition from book to screen that I think are really worth seeing.

It's not fully animated or anything, but I think it makes good use of the VN medium. The images that go along with the text are iconic shots you'll recognize from the anime and the simple tricks that they used, combining sound effects and the BGM and using simple shit like manga-style SWORD CLASHES and wooshy lines and closeups on individual parts of the pictures and other such things all create a lot of atmosphere and makes the action scenes feel surprisingly kinetic.

Its worth giving it a chance if you liked the anime.

There is a movie quadrilogy (I think?) adapting the Heaven's Feel route on the way. I think the first one comes out sometime this summer actually.

Anyway, like I said, if the thought of staring at the characters standing still will the text comes up is that unappealing to you, you can always try the LP. Its formatted more like a novel. But I would give the actual VN an earnest try before you do that.

Also, the UBW movie was made by Studio Deen, the same people who made the first Fate series, they're notoriously shit at VN adaptation. Fan discs like KT and HA came a year after the original, fully completed story. I'm not even complaining about events mixed in between real chapters, as much as the main story itself having far weaker parts early on (and the currently released chapter of 1.5) that aren't even written by Nasu, and don't contribute that much to the overall narrative. "Fanservice" doesn't just mean skimpy outfits, it means stuff like pseudo-Servants of old characters to pander to fans, or the whole self-insert protagonist and his harem, wasting the potential for a real lead character.
