We hate him because he's insufferable and completely irrational. Not just an average self insert from an ero VN, but a character who trascends that shit to never evolve and accept the flaws of his ideals. Shit just works for him in the end since he's the MC, but he's horribly written.

I think the whole romance with Saber in Fate is what needed the most work, even Nasu wants to rewrite it. Make him seem less bratty and stupid, while still retaining the PTSD. That way, it might actually be believable that Saber would come to rely on him.

I think the ending is great and possibly my favorite in the VN, the journey there is what needs reworking.

Fate Shirou was the only one who grew up without needing Archer asspulls to power him up in a shitty shounen way. He actually pursued his love instead of passively taking affection, he actually had a romance worth shit where he truly hurt himself in the process of learning how to handle a romantic relationship instead of the one dimensional relationship he has with Rin/Sakura which only depends of the circumstances. He was raw, flawed, made mistakes and grew up far more than any Shirou in the end, getting over his guilt and maturing his love for Saber. He doesn't need a shitty power up or a babysitter to fulfill his dreams and ideals like in UBW, he does it with his own guts and own hardwork. He doesn't abandon everything for love, even if he's tempted, because his love interest is the same type as he is, he takes his dreams and journeys to meet the woman he loves again to make her happy.

Once you're older, you realize Fate Shirou was the best written one. The one who didn't need any asspull and was allowed to be a character who was wrong before he learned to be right, and he did this without riding on Archer's dick or arm.

This. The basement scene trumps any scene for Shirou in FSN to me. Because it had a better and more powerful built up than his bickering with Archer, that was mostly about himself, rather than orders; or HF drama. I love HF for Illya and Kotomine, but I agree Fate Shirou ended up being the best, he had the most slow and hurtful process to get there.

Fate Shirou is a composite of both Shirou's journey: the one who follows his ideals, and the one who chooses love and personal happiness instead.
