DM: started everything. (some) solid characters and villains, a lot of bad pacing, shoddy attempt at following IRL game rules. movie is noncanon as shit and absolutely horrendous.

GX: way more solid characters, better villains, introduction of better themed archetypes other than Harpie lady or 'these cards are all masks lol!'. Has a horrible start but gets better. still doesn't follow IRL rules

5D's: well developed main cast, solid motivations, character arcs, interesting duels. goes to shit after episode 64 and character motivations are flushed down the drain. movie features the protags of the other two series. it's okay. STILL DOESNT FOLLOW IRL RULES

ZEXAL: well-developed characters, shitty motivations aside from one or two antagonists, gets better in the second half. Godawful finale, but mostly follows IRL rules

Arc-V: Fantastic start with several interesting characters, an intriguing setup for the conflict and universe, finally follows game rules(aside from ACTION DUELS), and some of the best looking duels in the franchise. pacing goes to shit about 50 episodes in, and the writing goes to utter trash 100 episodes in. ends on a wet fart.

season 0: not awful, but not especially good. features an over-the-top edgelord MC who just murders people who even slightly inconveniences him. duel monsters cameos but only kaiba really seems to play.

I think you should lower your expectations when it comes to romance in kids shows. It's not like they will make the characters kiss or have sex on screen. In Shounen, the build up in the relationship of the characters is more than enough to imply they will get together. It's almost like you think Yuya and all the yus won't fuck Yuzu in the future. I don't expect Aoi and Yusaku to kiss or anything but just showing something similar o the others series is more than enough.
