Er, that's a step above everything else. Animation in general still carries the social stigma of either being for kids or trash TV filled with edgy jokes because animators and writer write them as such in order to make a profit.

The reason why anime films can't really be counted as part of the mainstream anime industry is because he makes a movie every few years or so. People get to see it once, but that's it. There are no specials, no OVAs, nothing. After that, all they can do is to rewatch the same films over and over. On the other hand, people watch TV series all the time. They get to see the same characters over and over, week after week, for several months. People like Miyazaki films because they're special. If most anime was exactly like his films, then he'd be just yet another anime director, no different from everybody else.

He doesn't like how highly commercialized and infantile the anime industry has become. Anime at this point exists to advertise the toys, light novels, manga, or video game that it was based off of. Even though it was true for anime 30 years ago, it's much more transparent now because of the existence of social media. Him making an anime wouldn't solve the problem, it would contribute to it: making money off of an IP that existed 20 years ago and rebooted so old fans and new fans can enjoy.

I should clarify that Miyazaki doesn't have a problem with people watching his movies. He mostly has a problem with the industry trying to pervert his product by selling cheap merchandise, dakimakura's, pornography based off of his works, or even see his movies be degraded by modern J-pop and a generic artstyle.
