It is a shit trope. There's nothing exceptional about humans and every sci-fi story that uses this as a plot device is automatically shit in my book. Like I said, human feelings are rooted in our biology. The anisotropic beings are able to scan humans and understand what makes them tic, like taking apart a machine. We can study a lesser animal's behavioural patterns and learn how to deal with them, without "getting infected" by them. I don't suffer from dissoaciative disorders when I study combustion engines or migratory patterns.

Inhabiting a lesser lifeform body and being subjected to its shortcomings is another can of worms altogether. Like the notion of a human swapping bodies with a bird, and somehow remaining himself while at the same time being affected by a bird's instincts. A bird's brain can't hold a human consciousness, so where is it located? It is spiritualist bullshit of the highest order, separating mind and body and treating it as an interchangeable thing. Meanwhile, the idea of zaShunina's appearance being purely a creation for the purpose of communication makes way more sense.

I don't see how humans being exceptional or not has anything to do with this trope. If you lived with ancient romans for a while, maybe you'd take up the habit of eating while lying on a couch. We ourselves and the place we live in are continuously exchanging information, we are shaped by the world we live in and the people living around us as much as we shape them.
It's just that zaShunina was so very far removed from us, that his development comes as spectacular.
