Focus on physical prowess isn't good imo, because it devolves a match/fight into a contest of who has the "best" body, instead of being a contest of who makes the better decisions more consistently. A better decision maker could be brute-forced to a defeat in an unfair enough scenario.
Also, matches/fights with unrealistic elements have the freedom, the option to execute anything that a more realism-bound match/fight can execute, while the inverse isn't true.

Teppu is great not for the MMA(though it was well done) but because the MC is a complete inversion of the typical shonen MC, shes tall, strong , naturally talented and is a cocky douche bag.

its almost like eyebrows is the MC and the story is simply being told from the rivals point of view.

thats what makes it good, the best sports manga are the ones that use the sport as a sort of mirror of the MC's conflict.

>>
>>158664287
Funny thing is they were baiting with that shit for quite a while, about how you have to become a "monster" to survive at the world stage, and Ippo being the beta cuck that he is obviously can't handle it.

Regardless, it's obvious that he's never gonna go down that path and the plot will find some bullshit nice guy powers for him instead.

For me, matches/fights are more interesting to spectate than the players' backstories, when done well enough. Focusing on the latter detaches the viewer from the feel of tension of the moment, from the sense of responsibility and meaningfulness behind each player's actions, and from the tactical/strategical options both players/teams can take.
It's like spectating a fighting game match, or moba match, for example; saying that one's more interested on a particular player or team's story than on their matches is the same as saying that their matches aren't interesting.
>>
>>158665280
Not him, but I agree with him, and I'd say that matches should tie into growth, but the minutiae of decisions and strategy really doesn't matter much for me. I think it's better to do it in broad strokes, once you get too much into the nitty-gritty then I usually start to lose interest, as someone who doesn't give a shit about actual sports.

>It's like spectating a fighting game match, or moba match, for example; saying that one's more interested on a particular player or team's story than on their matches is the same as saying that their matches aren't interesting.
I think this is a seriously flawed comparison from the start. Again, I don't care about real sports (or "real" e-sports), but I enjoy plenty of sports manga. Whether something is interesting in reality and whether it can be used in an interesting narrative are very different things.

Just an example: MC's opponent started doing boxing because he was bullied at school, yet it has no relation to his playstyle which takes advantage of his long arm reach. Which was more interesting to see, his backstory or how to try to win against him (and how the opponent adjusts to that)? For me, if the matches sucked, I'd sleep through the manga; it was the (acceptable) wait for the next matches that kept me reading it to the end.

>I think this is a seriously flawed comparison from the start. Again, I don't care about real sports (or "real" e-sports), but I enjoy plenty of sports manga. Whether something is interesting in reality and whether it can be used in an interesting narrative are very different things.
If the manga/anime fail to convince me that the matches are interesting to read/watch, there's not much left to keep me reading/watching it.
>>
>>158668223
>If the manga/anime fail to convince me that the matches are interesting to read/watch, there's not much left to keep me reading/watching it.
What about the characters? The story? You know, the things that keep you reading any other manga. I mean, obviously if there's huge swathes of boring shit the manga's bad, but you can make the matches interesting without it actually being about the match itself in detail, by (again) using broad strokes and focusing on the people playing the sport rather than the gameplan/strategy, which I just find pretty dull if it's floating on its own without giving me a reason to care.
>>
Ashita no Joe is probably the best objectively. Touch and Ping Pong are also good.

>Teppu is great not for the MMA
Teppu is the most realisitc depiction of martial arts in manga I've ever saw.
>>158656945
Finished way too soon.
>>
>>158668707
Characters (and opponent match-ups, and/or team sinergy when available) are interesting in terms of the possibilities added to the games (or explorable by the players), certain backstories (along with the characters' previous match/fight experiences/technology/specific training) may affect their potential and/or playstyles somehow, which makes them interesting to read/watch, as long as they can somehow affect a match/fight's progress.
Story.. I don't see myself caring for the story more than a match, unless that match (or match segment) isn't important and isn't interesting. To exemplify this, watching this playthrough (while trying to imagine what the player will do next, or else, much of the fun is lost) is perfectly enjoyable without the need to know the game's story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZg5Ewi3hsU

Factually wrong.
>>MC always win against everybody, even national karate champion.
She had a street fight with Sanae, where she would have lost hadn't she done that trick with the shoe. The other fight of theirs was a MMA fight. Natsuo was trained by the 2nd best womens' MMA fighter in Japan and put great amounts of time and effort into it, has amazing talent and reach advantage due to her height. Compare that to Sanae who started training MMA around the same time as Natsuo, but didn't put as much effort into it, isn't as talented as Natsuo and as good at learning things and was trained by someone who probably isn't as great of a coach as Natsuo's coach.

>>158681934
Not really. You're assuming everyone is the same. But that's not the case. (Sorry if that sounded snarky).

Some people are just born naturally smarter or more athletically gifted. Their natural talent can get them pretty far ahead.

With Sanae, we got to take into account that sure, she's a champ (actually, I can't remember, WAS she a champ? And was it national or regional?), but for their age bracket at the time, we're not exactly talking about a gold medal Olympian here. Imagine a 13 year old vs an 11 year old. The 13 year old is good and naturally talented, while the 11 year old is a champ in his age bracket. The 13 year old has a pretty decent chance due to the physical advantages.

But once the MC started facing people who are equally or maybe even more talented, like Eyebrows and Brazilian Girl, that's when she hit a wall. Heck, when she started, she couldn't even beat the submission girl due to the experience gap. As that gap closed, her natural talent let her dominate submission girl.

Too bad Eyebrows is a freeeeeak.

Think of Natsuo as like, I dunno, a Brock Lesnar type. Someone who is absurdly physically gifted.

All that being said, the story of Teppu is such that, yeah, the MC was super dominant. Not as dominant as one might think once we start breaking down her record, but she's hardly an underdog MC.

She didn't lost any relevant fight, except the fights with Mawatori. The only fights she lost were off panel sparring sessions and against her rival, but as general rule, whenever losing a fight would set her back and further from her goal of taking revenge, she would win. BTW, the final fight was as lame as you could expect.

Her losing the final fight, which is "totally unexpected!" borders on the most boring cliche ever, as nearly all the sports manga which includes some kind of tournament will feature the MC moving to the finals, only to lose to some rival, which will set a new goal to keep the story moving forward. As "unexpected, omg, what a twist!" it was, is par for the course for the MC to lose on their first tournament on any manga; even dragon ball, which was not a sports manga, had Goku losing his first two tournaments. Honestly, for the most part, I can't find the MC interesting because at one hand, is unidimensional ("omg, I'm so good at everything that I'm bored all the time") to the point the rest of the cast was more attractive; and at the other, because the plot is boring as she steam rolls through every relevant match. Almost every time she wins is because some strike which lead to a ko, which is expected on a kickboxing match, but unrealistic on a mma fight. Particularly against a larger opponent with longer reach, playing stand up game is dumb because you're playing on his strengths. In other words, any mma fighter would learn that against a taller opponent the key is to take it to the ground and win through submission or choke. Yet, for some reason, in every sanctioned fight, every opponent goes into a punch exchange with the mc, even seasoned fighters. C'mon, really?

Which, btw, remind me: did they ever addressed the fact of her weight class? Or are you going to tell me two characters with similar complexion, but nearly 10-20cm in height difference have similar weight?

Yeah, completely realistic and credible.
