Yeah, they're just THAT horrible. Nobody wants them, not their own men and not other men. A big part of the appeal of brownies in anime is that they have the exotic skincolor but otherwise caucasoid or mongloid facial features. It also results in nice contrasts that are impossible (or at least highly uncommon) IRL like tanned skin with white hair, or tanned skin with blue eyes.

Honestly Mestizo women are probably closer to anime brownies than black women.
